Jazz Owls by Margarita Engle is a recent project that I am proud to have done art for. (cover and b&w interiors). It is the story of the so called Zoot Suit Riots of 1943 done as a novel in verse by Margarita in a very loving, truthful and conscious way! It is important to know this history to avoid allowing anyone to push us back in time to repeat this sad part of history of this country.
From Margarita: "I hope Jazz Owls will help young readers understand how World War II changed the roles of women, as well as the hopes and dreams of Latinos in the U.S." -- Young People’s Poet Laureate Margarita Engle
Thanks to Reka Simonsen and Atheneum Books commissioning me and for being so great to work with!
Thanks to Cynthia Leitich Smith for posting this on her blog!
