I spent the last two days with my good friend @terry_meer at @sustainable_kashi.
It was a wonder filled 48 hours of canoeing on the river, taking in all of the Earth’s elements, cooking garden fresh and wild caught meals around the fire and discussing sustainability, permaculture and existence in general.
I feel refreshed and rejuvenated to head back to the city tonight!
Kashi is a place I have been visiting since I arrived in Florida last December and Terry has been so influential and helpful in preparing me for this journey. I have spent many, many hours soaking in his food growing and foraging knowledge. I remember when I first arrived feeling somewhat helpless and asking him hundreds of questions. He provided me with the seeds for my staple Seminole pumpkins and the cuttings for my all-important cassava. I have Terry to thank for being one week into Food Freedom and feeling as healthy as can be.
One week is officially complete! Last night I had dinner in the Kashi community and I brought my own 100% grown and foraged meal, while others ate what was served in the kitchen. It was smooth as can be. It’s great that I can be on this deep journey, yet still remain fully social and immersed in society as much as desired.

Produce bags, beeswax wraps, silicone sandwich bags (like the one in our story) and stainless steel straws are all nice to have but not 100% necessary. I love each of the reusable items I’ve collected and use them all the time but if you’re just starting out, don’t feel like you have to rush and buy all new things. Start with what you have.
For example, if you don’t have a big cotton bag for bread, try using a towel instead. This week I was using my usual bread bag for something else & so that’s exactly what I did - I used a small towel to pick up fresh bread. I simply asked them to put the loaf in my towel & it was no problem. Reducing your waste doesn’t have to be expensive or a grand ordeal, you can start exactly where you are ✨

Um in Zukunft Lebensmittelabfälle zu vermeiden, schreibe heute einen Einkaufszettel für deinen nächsten Einkauf. So gehe ich dabei vor:
1. Nachsehen, welche Lebensmittel noch auf Vorrat sind und welche davon bald verbraucht werden sollten
2. Überlegen, wie viele/welche Mahlzeiten ich in der kommenden Woche zuhause kochen/ vorbereiten möchte.
3. Ergänzende Zutaten, v.a. frisches, regionales und saisonales Obst und Gemüse aufschreiben
4. Einkaufen gehen – vorbereitet mit Behältern und Beuteln, um Verpackungsabfall zu vermeiden.
5. An die Liste halten und maximal eine ungeplante Sache kaufen.
Diese Vorplanung spart beim Einkaufen Zeit und Geld und beugt Lebensmittelverschwendung vor.

We’ve spent this week using up what was left in our pantries. How did you do with that challenge? Now it’s time to prepare the next grocery shopping trip. Writing a shopping list helps you to prevent food waste. That’s how I do it:
1. Checking what’s left in my pantry and fridge. Figure out which items should be used up soon.
2. Evaluating how many/ which meals I am going to prepare at home next week.
3. Noting down foods, especially fresh, regional and seasonal fruits and vegetables, to add to what’s left at home.
4. Going shopping – well equipped with an adequate amount of boxes and bags to avoid packaging waste.
5. Sticking to my shopping without buying more than one additional item.
