The holy city on the banks of River Ganges, The spiritual capital of India, Varanasi has been referred to as Kashi (Kāśī ) in Rigveda, an ancient Indian collection of Sanskrit hymns. The word Kashi is derived from the Sanskrit root word kaś- which means ‘to shine’, the reason why it is also referred as the City of lights.
The name Varanasi, as it is now currently known as, bear its roots from the two tributaries that borders the city, Varuna flowing north of the city and Assi, flowing in the south part of the city near Assi Ghat.
The name Benaras (Banāras) is most widely used name for the city. It is usually taken as the modified version of Varanasi itself. Some believe that it was done by the colonizers to suit their accent while some claim that it came out of the Bengali way of pronouncing Varanasi as Benarasi that eventually got transformed to Benaras. There is also a speculation that it originated from the name of king, Banar who established it as a pilgrimage. ✨🕉🔱🌅🌊✨
