NFL News: Bills GM Brandon Beane mentioned during an interview with WGR 550 Buffalo that second-year WR Zay Jones will have to “earn his way” after a disappointing rookie season.
Jones underwent knee surgery last month and missed a large portion of the team’s offseason program. Bills HC Sean McDermott did not disclose the severity of Jones’ surgery, but mentioned that he will be sidelined until training camp in late-July.
In result, Beane reiterated that Jones has some ground to cover in terms of earning a starting role on the team. “He’s not just going to necessarily go right to the top of the line,” Beane said of Jones. “He’ll have to earn his way. Part of that will just be just getting his feel. He’s only played with Nathan Peterman. He has not got to play with Josh Allen or AJ [McCarron] yet. So that bond there will just have to form.” Jones, a former 2017 second-round pick out of East Carolina, appeared in 15 games last season (10 starts) and hauled in 27 receptions for 316 yards and two touchdowns.
Jones was arrested in Los Angeles for suspicion of felony vandalism back in March. He was involved in an altercation with a man on the 30th floor of an apartment building, with the man seemingly being identified as Jones' older brother, Cayleb. Jones allegedly smashed a window, resulting in cuts on his foot, and tried to jump out, but with Cayleb and police stopping it.
However, prosecutors dropped all charges against Jones a couple of days following the incident.
