I never even attempted this pose until 2 days ago. I just “assumed” I couldn’t do it. Until I was out with a friend who asked me to try! I was close! And for the last 48 hours it’s been my obsession. In one week from today I’ll be teaching my first class at @yogabunzstudio ... instead of teaching yoga however, I’ll be teaching stretching. The way I see it, people don’t know how to stretch properly. Stretching is so important and it’s often overlooked.⠀

My classes are for people like me, who love to spend time in the gym but can’t be bothered to stretch afterwards. ⠀

No “yoga”, no meditation and no chanting. Just a really good stretch!⠀

Parivrtta Ardha Utkatasana
Chair pose w a glute stretch and twist variation

Parivrtta Utkatasana is a standing twist which strengthens the legs and back whilst creating flexibility in spine and cleanses the inner organs.

It’s benefits include:

Strengthen the hip flexors, the thighs and glutes.
Stretches and strengthens the calf muscles.
Opens the chest and shoulders
Increases the range of motion of the ankles.
Detoxifies and energises.
Like all twists it is important to keep the alignment of your hips square in order to protect your sacro-iliac joint. You can keep your hips square by aligning your knees and feet together.

It is also important to keep your chest and shoulders higher than your hips. If you drop the chest down the spine will become rounded which is not a good position for twisting. Try to lift your chest up and keep your spine long, turning your heart and and gaze up to the sky.

Twisted chair pose is one of the best postures for detoxifying the body and building strength. The bent knees engages and builds strength in your quadriceps, and the twist is known for ringing out the toxins in the upper body. The aim is to get your thighs parallel to the floor but that ability comes with time and practice. Tip #1 Unlock hips
Opening - or unlocking - the hips means learning to separate the movement of the thighs from the movement of the pelvis. Discovering this essential principle will transform your hips and create greater freedom in all your yoga postures. .

Tip #2 Create flexibility and strength in hip flexors
One of the first things many students discover when they start practising yoga is their tight hip flexors. Whether the reason is a sedentary or very active lifestyle, this imbalance affects postures AND can lead to lower back pain. .

Tip #3 Use your core to open and stabilize hips
Ignite fire in your core, build strength in your legs for grounding, breathe new life force into your pelvis, and sweat out old, worn-out belief patterns that are living in these stubborn joints!

Tip #4 Breathe into hips
In other words, try to take your breath all the way down to your pelvis. Purposefully guiding the breath into your hips will release tension; deep breathing will reduce stress and anxiety for improved sleep and digestion.

Tip #5 Get enough calcium and vitamin D
Strengthen and protect your bones through your diet (dairy products, dark green leafy vegetables, fish, eggs) and with 15 minutes in the sun twice a week.

We want to make the most of the summer and living so close to the mountains. This hike was a bit much for us! Steep incline up and the farthest Chloe has ever walked resulting in several meltdowns and having to pack both kids down the mountain. We got minutes from the gorgeous view and lakes but could not convince the almost 3yr old it was worth it.
