Tomorrow. And tomorrow. And tomorrow. There will be Sakurai trees, Ninjas, and Lady Macbeth playing a cello. One year after #YukioNinagawa passes on, I get to be enchanted by this breathtakingly beautiful work.
#ZacWatch2017 #56 :: Ninagawa Macbeth by Ninagawa Company Japan.
A perfect transposing of Shakespeare's tragedy onto ancient Japan. The music especially paints such melancholy, grief, anger... The use of the altar and screens divides different times and spaces, creating scenes after scenes of spectacle. The fight scenes especially, are such a sight to behold. When Macbeth dies, the change of the colour of the moon, and the silence, amplifies the brevity.
I liked how the actor playing Macbeth became a cheeky and fun person during curtain call. And the ruptous applause still rings in my ears, this cast certainly deserves it. And to Mr Ninagawa, whose portrait hangs from above, thank you for this new world classic.
