October 11, 1958 - #MissFirePrevention was a national contest held annually during Fire Prevention Month (October). The winner would tour stations across the country. These contests still take place on a local level however OFD no longer participates. Today, OFD’s Fire Prevention Bureau @ofdprevention works hard to protect all citizens within the City Of Oakland limits from natural or man-made hazards which may cause injury or loss to property. 📸Unknown from OFD archive. #youroaklandfirefighters #oakland #oaklandish #oaklandisproud #oaklandhistory #fire #photography #rescue #iaff @oaklandfirefighters @oaklandmuseumca @ofdtater @oaklandusar4 @ofd20dr @ofd29 @ofdrecruit @oakland @chief_miller @cwwimmer @californiafirefighter

@oaklandfirearchive 33 Engine, 1950. W. Thomas & Burl Smith. Pictured is a converted weapons carrier outfitted with 6 wheel drive, carrying 12 Indian Water Pump Tanks, a 300 gallon water tank, and a 200ft. long chemical hose. In 1919 Oakland began testing African American applicants to serve in segregated units. On Jan 1, 1920, three African American men were hired. In 1925 the first all-African American firehouse, 22 Engine opened at 3230 Magnolia St. Any black man wishing to work for the department had to wait until an opening appeared at station 22, which could take years. Eventually this firehouse became overcrowded which resulted in the opening of two additional all black firehouses, Engines 33 and 28, both located in the Oakland hills. Desegregation did not occur in the Oakland Fire Department until 1955 following the appointment of Chief Sweeney 📸From Oakland Black Firefighters Association w/ info from Sarah Wheelock’s “The Desegregation of the Oakland Fire Department”, University Of California at Berkeley BA History Project. #youroaklandfirefighters #oakland #oaklandish #oaklandisproud #oaklandhistory #Obffa

The town of Brooklyn (1856-1872) was located to the east of Lake Merritt. Voters approved its annexation by Oakland in 1872. Brooklyn Township Volunteer Fire Department remained separate from Oakland Fire Department until 1887. The Brooklyn name lives on in Oakland via a new development currently under construction to be named Brooklyn Basin. It will be on the waterfront next to Jack London Square.
