Using the wall to deepen your practice, part 6 ❤
I love being able to share my favorite wall-stretches with you guys (and you're are always so appreciative of these flows 😊), so here is a new sequence I filmed today. Feel free to give it a try (but please warm up with first with some gentle heart-openers). 😍
If you scroll back through my videos (especially the ones with the hashtag #yogawithriva ) you'll see that we've done backbend warm-ups, hamstrings & hip-flexor stretching, and upper back & shoulder opening. This video has some more ways to use the wall for inversions and backbends 😍
Here is the series I'm doing in this flow:
1. Puppy pose (standing variation) - this is one of the best stretches for opening the shoulders and upper back.
2. Standing backbend & walk-down to wheel - the wall is a great way to learn how to prepare for drop-backs (shifting the weight forward and into the legs is essential).
2. Wheel pose - the key is to get your shoulders over the wrists as much as possible, and reaching your chest toward the wall helps with that.
3. Handstand hollowback - you guys already know how much I love hollowbacks for opening the chest & shoulders 👌🏼
4. Handstand scorpion - the wall is a great tool to help get deeper into this pose without having to worry about balance.
5. Forearm Hollowback and scorpion - similar to the handstand variations, doing these against the wall is so helpful with deepening the pose and not worrying about balance 😊

I've never been comfortable calling myself a "yogi". ✨I just say I practice yoga. For me, the labeling of something does not make it so, it just makes the mind feel comfortable. And so we cannot further our understanding if we are in a comfortable place, whether in the body-mind or in the mind-body. ✨ When you hear the word "yogi" (or any word actually) ... notice what mental picture comes to mind. Ahhhh yes, the mind makes an image, a picture, notice it? And so the architecture begins to build up a story in the body-mind space and the thought is complete, the answer has come. And so my consciousness and my perspective stays the same, unchanging. So if I want to see the unseen and deeper into more unfathomable dimensions, I must take notice of mental images and stories that are being created and soften them. The intention becomes to experience without an image, to bear witness without thought. So that the mind is still and absorption of what is, is possible. The greatest interference to our own personal growth is our thought patterning and our jumping to apparent (but rarely true) conclusions. In a way, we self-sabotage unknowingly .... but perhaps now we know to be vigilant and ever watchful. If I want to truly understand, I must release all of the ideas I have collected thus far. Only then is the slate clear and ready. So every day is new and completely different and every day I am new and completely different. And in my newness, there is a readiness to grow. 🌿

When I first began my yoga journey (and couldn't do a handstand for even a second) 2 years ago, @coffeeandrainbows @natashaswinter @upsidedownmama @casa_colibri and @erinkellyart were like the first dream-team group of yogis that I ever followed. They were and still are a HUGE inspiration to me and I have learned a lot from them as a virtual student of their practice. Sooooo to be included in their group 2 years later and tagged by them to try new handstand presses is such an HONOR to me. 🙏🏽 I hadn't done a firefly press since I got pregnant so it's been forever but I got it again, im so happy. This vid is a progression of my practice, I was able to sneak in the #toetaptuesday but not the pike press... 🙈 but Toni gave me a pass cuz I had a baby recently 😂 lol so I'll take it this once.. But I'll try again another time!!!

🌳 Each day we shed and grow.
Same with each time we practice yoga, travel, venture through nature. We heal and loose parts of ourselves that no longer serve us. Along the way we grow and find new pieces to fit our ever changing mold. "Getting lost to be found" used to sound silly to me, but that's because I didn't understand it at the time. Now it's a statement I remind myself of often 🙏🏽

Laser focus. There's something to be said for that kind of presence 💪

Have been thinking a lot lately about minimalism. And what it means to be a minimalist in a 2500 sq ft house. While renovating it. With an entire room of stuff still in boxes.

Am I still a minimalist? Are me & minimalism "on a break?" Minimalists want to spend less time organizing and maintaining their "stuff," but what if playing with our house is most of what I do? And I alternate between loving and hating it.

I want to create a beautiful, functional home & I'm constantly feeling pulled between minimalist yearning & consumer lusting. Finding a balance is harder than I thought it would be.

Didn't get that deep in this stretch this time. Should've done some more mobility work but, I was pressed for time.
Anyone know about any good preps for planche push ups. I believe my hand placement needs to be close to my ribs but, I'm new to this.

Day 8 of #Yogis123 is the #lotuspose. I can't do a full lotus pose which the double bind, but I sure as heck can do a lotus in headstand and then lift into pincha! Lol. ·

Day 9 of #WannaPincha! L legs pincha. Which is pretty much what I did yesterday, except today I focused on not hopping and more pulling that top leg back until my right foot lifted. Not easy. Going back to the strap today to keep my arms from turning in.·
