I’m not really sure at what stage in my life it happened; but, over the course of a lifetime i realized how anxiety lived and can live in my body. When i was a little girl, i remember getting really nervous, my heart would beat quickly, and my body would physically shake (think about the reaction to being really cold) each time i would have to speak in class. I remember becoming overwhelmed with fear anytime i had to confront a friend or peer on the playground. I did a lot though growing up. I was a president of this, a captain of that. I competed with instruments and with my body. Yet, i still knew it was a source of anxiety. So where did it go? At the time, i couldn’t name it, but my yoga practice brought it to the light. Instead of trying to make it something else, or beating myself up for not making it go away, my yoga practice taught me to love myself even more. Yesterday, i just led a meditation on a platform that has access to 2.2 million people and i was nervous. And no, my practice does not make it go away. Instead, i use it as what my beloved teacher Swami Jaya Devi says, “as fuel”. I used the jitters in my body as confirmation that I am alive, that i can feel the sensations this extraordinary body can hold, I used it as a way to remind me I am human. Lately, my teachings that i share have been embracing the What is now in order to understand, love, embrace, and consciously decide if we want to change anything at all. Or, how we can use what we have for deeper understanding. I would love to practice with you soon so that we can collectively tap into the What is now in all of us.✨

Fitmas NOT Quitmas Day 13/31

Today was hard...life got in the way....my routine was ALL messed up....I am tired.... I ate crap and I did not workout.
But then a ray of ☀️ in my life a new friend motivated me!!!! I had a choice a nap or a workout. I was just going to call it a rest day but she has been working so hard towards her goals that I knew I could do it too right beside her! That is what this team is about. We ALL need accountability we all need a sounding board we all need encouragement.
Another friend messaged me struggling about fitness today and we talked about not looking back in what we did not do but looking forwards and learning about what we can do in the future to stay the course.
I could not turn back the hour ago that I binged on MORE Trader Joe's yumminess but what I could do is follow the advice I have Jenifer and change my future, press play and do something I could be proud of!! This is called TEAM this is called SUPPORT this is called ACCOUNTABILITY!!! I am launching a new test group with 80 days of coaching and a training and nutrition plan that will get you amazing results. I want you to be a part of it!! I promise you it will change your life!!! Getting in some early practice to set me up with the right frame of mind for the day. Today was one of those days where I deeply wanted to hit the (virtual ) snooze button and go back to sleep but since that isn’t an option with a small tigger jumping all over my bed I decided to flip the switch and get motivated instead. Sometimes we need to give ourselves a jump start to hit the day running and squats are perfect for that.

It is said that sun salutations or Surya Namaskar can help reduce stress levels. The practice can take just a few minutes and can be done almost anywhere, although you may get some odd looks if you start to practice in the middle of the office.
Researchers divided 124 college students with high stress into a Surya Namaskar–practicing group and a control group that did not participate in yoga or any other stress-reducing activity or exercise. At the end of two weeks, the daily sun saluters reported a quiet mind, feelings of rest and joy, and less worry than the control group.
This video shows one of the most basic sun salutes. Give it a go, practice five every day and feel the difference.

About 13 years ago we started a tradition of a fancy pants (trousers) party 🎉 It is such a fun tradition but our lives had been crazy the past few years and we have not had a party since living in the 🇬🇧. Stress. Worry. Anxiety. Tension. These are all feelings that take a physical and mental toll. During this workshop you will learn yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditation exercises, and dietary tips that will leave you feeling relaxed, calm, and peaceful. You will leave this workshop with knowledge of natural ways to bring stillness to your body and mind whether you are at home, work, or in line at the grocery store. All postures and meditations will be light and easy, so no previous experience or knowledge is required.

This workshop is presented by Amanda Spriggs-Sloan, a licensed therapist and certified yoga instructor, and assisted by Brent Sloan, a life coach and certified yoga instructor. It will be held on Saturday, December 16th from 1:00-3:00, and the cost is $50 in advance or $60 the day of. Is stress affecting your ability to go to bed at night? Whether it’s work, family, relationships, or the impending holidays that have you constantly strung out, this 10 minute bedtime routine will work for you. ~What do I need?~
A wall
Lavender essential oil
Meditation music (can be found on YouTube or Spotfiy)
1. Find a quiet, dark space in your house where you can be alone. Option to light a candle or two.
2. Put 4-5 drops of the essential oil in your palm and rub your hands together. Cover your nose with your hands and take several rounds of deep inhales and exhales.
3. Rub the essential oil on the crown of your head, your third eye (middle of the forehead above the eyebrows), your heart, inside of your wrists and bottoms of your feet
4. Lay down flat on the ground face up. Begin focusing on your breath, inhaling and exhaling for 4 counts each. Option to begin playing the meditation music of your choice.
5. After continuing like this for 1-2 minutes, see if you can keep your inhales at 4 counts and increase the length of your exhales to 6 counts. Do this for another 1-2 minutes
6. Move into Legs Up the Wall Pose (Viparita Karani - see photo 2, from Yoga Journal.) To enter this pose, sit right next to the wall so that your right or left hip is touching it. Begin to swing your legs from the ground up the wall and rest your torso flat into the ground as you do so. Stay in this pose for 3-4 minutes and come out slowly by bending your knees, dragging your feet back down the wall and rolling over to one side. •

My body responds to Yoga so well. Fat is melting off, muscles are becoming elongated and lean. I mix it up with ballet stretches and I can hardly walk these days, but I sure am happier, hehe. And not only does it provide us with physical strength and flexibility, but Spiritual as well. I feel more connected. I feel dedicated to something while my ego pops in to say "Youreee not working and your thirty." LOL. #theinternalstruggleisreal But then I get messages from you bright eyed wonders, and I am truly humbled. I'm just going to force myself to enjoy this Winter! In the back of my mind, I am so excited for the warm weather however.

Compared to standing, sitting leads to 40-90% more stress on the back and a flattening of the lumbar (lower) region of the spine.

Malasana helps ease the hips open and increase mobility in the hips, legs, and back. The hips are a common dwelling place for stifled and intense emotions, so helping unlock and open the hips can provide much needed emotional release as well as improve balance of the mind, body, and spirit.

Lastly, because the body is closer to the floor (specifically the first chakra/muladhara which is associated with safety and trust) in Malasana, the asana has a powerful grounding quality.

3. Aids in Eliminating What No Longer Serves You

In times of great stress, anxiety, fear and loss, the most important thing you can do for yourself is to come back to your breath and connect it to the body. These fires encircling LA are terrifying, and it’s very easy to get out of ones body and into ones head, going over the what if’s time and again. For me, yoga, moving my body and focusing on my breath is the only thing that calms me in times like this. I am so grateful for my practice now more than ever, when it seems that every day there is a new disaster that calls for me to really focus inward and find a way to calm and soothe myself. I believe that it won’t always be like this, but until things calm down in this crazy world we are living in, we have to find a way to keep ourselves grounded and centered. 🙏

"Make self care a priority" * #reversebucketlist2017 item 3 ... There was a time when I let stress get the better of me. I wasn't in tune with my body and self care was an aside rather than a must, so by the time I got a massage I was in so much pain I could barely move. Now I'm all about preventing stress and relying on self care tools I have learned and have at the ready when I do get stressed so I don't get to that point. It's all about pushing my re-set button. My work as an editor is deadline driven and stressful by nature, so it's so important to hone in on this and master self care tools, which can be simple five minute things or longer ones that take an hour.... This might be a bath, meditation, breath work, journaling, restorative yoga, yoga Nidra, the Super Sleep Yoga sequence before bed, reframing my thoughts or getting a massage - my all-time fave and always helps me re-set.
I've gotten migraines since I was a little kid, it's a neurological disorder, and what I've found is preventative massage keeps these at bay. I used to maybe get a massage once a month, but as I've committed to making self care a priority, I now make it a point to get massage every two weeks. I've enjoyed a few at the lovely @samsaramindbody where I teach yoga in London, pictured above swipe 👈. Sometimes when I'm travelling a lot this schedule gets thrown off and my body, mind and headaches always let me know it. Other times I'm lucky to go to spas for work and write about them, like the beautiful and serene Four Seasons @fssurfside also pictured above.
For me self care is so much about tuning into the body, learning to listen to it when it's whining a bit so you don't have to hear it scream out in pain, learning how stress and body pain is entirely connected and how we can work with the two together to solve both.
It's always a work in progress, but I've come such a long way. Life feels so much easier now and I no longer let stress get the better of me, it's huge for me to able to say that!
Speaking of which, I'm overdue for a massage because I was away last week, better make an appointment!

Start with forgiving yourself. ⠀

Consider a yoga form that creates a sense of surrender and release - in a safe way for you. If childs pose (balasana) feels like a comforting shape for you, consider coming to your knees, sitting on uour heels and folding forward. ⠀

I can always tell when I’ve spent too long in the masculine. I start to feel off kilter somewhat; no longer being productive but feeling rushed, scattered & stressed 🤪. This is when I need to be careful. A shift in hormones as a result of this imbalance usually throws my thyroid out 🤨

A few rounds of Chandra Namaskara (moon salutation) will usually correct this imbalance for me.
This beautiful sequence restores the feminine energy & has a calming effect on the mind. My thoughts become less scattered & I begin to feel more grounded.
Chandra means ‘moon’ and various poses in the sequence activate the lunar (feminine energy source). This has a cooling, relaxing effect that enables a better connection with your consciousness.
When I’m feeling particularly imbalanced, I know a strong practice is inadvisable. Instead of the standing postures, I keep my practice low— starting from a shashankasana (hare pose) {This was previously demonstrated & also has a calming & cooling effect}. Keep the breath steady & work on finding balance & coordination as you move through slowly.
How amazing is it that we can use yoga to restore & maintain optimum health in the body? 🙌
