When going through stressful situations, a helpful way to calm the body and mind is by practicing abdominal breathing. To practice, find a comfortable seat and gently place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly. Inhale through your nose for a count of four, and exhale through your nose for a count of four. Continue this breathing cycle for a few minutes and notice the body and mind start to relax.

Day 2 of #lovethyselfyoga is #pranayama , ie the breath. I swear this isn’t a picture of me picking my nose; I was trying to capture my favourite pranayama technique, alternate nostril breathing (swipe for the world’s most boring video of me actually doing it, but I warn you, you can never get those 30+ seconds of your life back). I’ve really been getting much more into the breathing element of my yoga practice in the last year (better late than never!) and now I really love the first few minutes of my classes when I cue breath and body awareness for my students. It doesn’t have to be a particular pranayama technique; I love visualising sending the breath to the backs, bottoms, and sides of my lungs, filling them like balloons, feeling my chest and belly rise and fall and my rib cage expand outwards. I like calming down my mind as I arrive on the mat by lengthening out the inhales and exhales bit by bit, eventually making the exhalations even longer, maybe pausing for a beat in between the breaths. And I’ve finally started using the breathing techniques off the mat, to quiet down my mind when it’s racing and bring me back to the present, and it’s honestly amazing.

A teacher I respect and enjoy classes from saw me fit to help her demo #pinchamayurasana #forearmbalance with props at the wall today in a 20-person class. As I have gained more awareness of myself, I can watch my ex competition dancer mindset come out in high intensity #vinyasa classes and in #inversion so this was a good ego-check to practice #aparigraha and avoid what @brenebrown refers to as the perform, please, perfect trap.

Need for connection drives desire for external acceptance and approval, especially in those disconnected and disapproving of themselves internally. When this happens in something like a yoga class, students can end up overly attached to teacher attention and praise and teachers can end up overly attached to the feeling of being needed and adored. Neither is healthy but as students and teachers it's so easy to fall into these traps of #transference and #countertransference. Always important to assess and ground into oneself.

It's so hard to get into new and sustainable habits/patterns and seated meditation has always been a challenge for me. This is after a half hour flow (the last video) that I did legs up the wall and then was able to sit after getting my body to release some stress/anxious energy and reduce cortisol/adrenaline levels from the work day and having a sick puppy. . . .
@andreaferretti and @jason_crandell had an interesting conversation in her podcast #yogaland in promotion of his series on @yogaglo on some of the myths, excuses, and fears of meditating. From a psychology standpoint, the one I found most interesting was being afraid to be quiet with ones self for fear of what might come up. We carry our minds around in our bodies all day but rarely actually are aware of ourselves, thoughts, emotions, and what's really going on unless we get quiet and still and allow what comes to come up. How can we really know ourselves if we don't allow ourselves space to just be? . . .

🤪I’ve noticed, when life get’s a little weird, so does my practice...
After an amazing time in Cyprus fully indulging & enjoying time with our family, I felt like I needed to digest and I practiced #naulikriya cleansing this morning.

This practice, advised on an empty stomach, uses the #bhandas and is said to tone the abdominal muscles, stimulate the digestive fire, destroy all diseases & remove toxins.
😮I’m not sure I could teach this to anyone yet, I’m still working out the feelings myself & I’m not quite on a ‘roll’ but you wanna know the craziest thing?
👉🏼I used to practice this in the bath when I was younger, long before I even knew what it was or it’s many benefits...🤯
