Why am I so positive, but struggle with depression?? ...
Depression is like your own little bully. It shows up when logically it shouldn't. It shows up when you're stressed, and sometimes when your not. Compassion and learning self help coping tools is two huge factors in combatting your depression. I find for myself, counseling is the best relief from my head. I can rant, ramble and go off about something completely ridiculous.. and my therapist still smiles back at me. 😁😁 She helps me to slow down my thought process, helps me process my thoughts rationally and helps me by sending me information about additional coping tools while I'm on my own without her to ramble with. 😋
I had a friends Mom tell me when I was about 12 years old that it is completely normal to talk to a counselor. She said she has no existing issues, but its handy to have a listening ear that will not judge you on what's going on in your head. Damn rights it is! ✔✔✔
Your brain is a very complex thing.. Why should we be ashamed of getting help for our heads?? We get help for diabetes, blood pressure, broken bones, worts, sometimes even the flu and are not ashamed. Why be ashamed of something you cannot control?? ...

We got props and we aren't afraid to use em! . . .
I love using props to help support students (myself included!) in class to make postures accessible and sustainable. This is super important in yin and restorative practices to help three different fully drop in and relax or hold passive postures. .

One of my favorite things as a yoga instructor is looking around the room and seeing everyone in a slightly different prop configurations because it means everyone is listening to and supporting their bodies in their unique needs. . . .

In the 2013 study presented, 47 ninth- and tenth-grade students who attended a rural western Massachusetts high school participated to “compare the acute effects of participating in a single yoga class versus a single standard physical education (PE) class on student mood.” The BRUMS and the PANAS-C were used to measure the constructs of mood and affect; both scales utilized in previous research on yoga in schools. The yoga class in which the adolescents participated was from the Kripalu Yoga in the Schools (KYIS) curriculum. One of the main differences experienced among the teenagers was that they reported “significantly greater decreases in anger, depression, and fatigues from before to after participating in yoga compared to PE.” The results suggest that “school-based yoga interventions may improve youth psychosocial well-being above and beyond typical school programming, which may be important to promoting beneficial long-term outcomes for youth.” Article: https://buff.ly/2w30jQI OR direct link on our FB post today.

By simply focusing your attention on your breathing and without doing anything to change it, you can move in the direction of relaxation.

This same philosophy is used in the “The 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise,” also called “The Relaxing Breath,” which promotes better sleep. This is based on pranayama, an ancient Indian practice that means “regulation of breath.This exercise is a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system, it eases the body into a state of calmness and relaxation.

It is effective because it encourages the fast removal of carbon dioxide. Appropriate respiration is effective in removing carbon dioxide from our systems. Doing so equates into a better preservation of the bicarbonate pool; our reservoirs for helping maintain an appropriate pH balance.

Breathe in through the mouth for 4 seconds
Hold the breath for 7 seconds
Exhale through the mouth for 8 seconds
