REVIEW: Mudras of India: A Comprehensive Guide to the Hand Gestures of Yoga and Indian Dance by Cain Carroll and Revital Carroll⠀

Neuroscience suggests that our touch-screen technology is depriving us of the evolutionary use of our hands as tools of the mind, diminishing the effort-driven reward system, putting us at greater risk for depression. (See Lifting Depression: A Neuroscientist’s Hand-On Approach to Activating Your Brain’s Healing Power by Kelly Lambert, Ph.D.) If this is true, Mudras of India offers us a way back to using our hands that could potentially reduce depression. Written by a yogi and a classically trained Indian Dancer, this is an astonishingly beautiful and well-researched book that offers the sacred art of hand gestures. In connecting hand to mind and heart, these 250 mudras can sustain our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. The mudras are arranged alphabetically, beautifully photographed, described, instructed and considered in terms of their symbolism and meaning in ritual. Where applicable, their traditional health benefits are included. Using the comprehensive index at the back can help you find the appropriate mudra to right imbalances in body mind and spirit. Whether you come to Mudras of India with an interest in dance, yoga, meditation or your own self-care, you will be well-served. ⠀

One aspect of LifeForce Yoga is the study and practice of mudras specific to mood management. I took this timelapse of my practice on Monday morning — and didn’t share it. It felt heavy and horrible, a step through of the Iyengar yoga JI1 sequence without being really “in it.” I inadvertently missed a few poses. I struggled to feel energised. And the worst bit for me, I knew I was holding back.
Then I remembered the words of Judith Viorst who said (preceded by a myriad of Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad things), that some days are like that.
Even in Australia.
.
This week @pandanational is raising awareness of perinatal anxiety and depression in Australia, something that can affect up to 1 in 5 women. Motherhood is huge. Check out their page facts and get on board in making yoga accessible for mums where you can — it’s a gift. 💕

Whatever you are frustrated with tonight, take a deep breath, and release it slowly. Sleep, dream, and find comfort in your room where the stars and the moon are watching over you. There is always tomorrow. Meditate tonight with a candle, and imagine the flame is holding the healing light of the stars and the moon. Let this love, this power, this comfort embrace you tonight, and allow you to sleep deeply through the night. #MeditationMondays

See y'all Friday 5-8pm! We'll take a tour, meet the teachers,

||MENTAL BREAKDOWN|| Many people ask me what brought me to yoga...and I talk about it healing a back injury years ago.
.
What I don’t talk about too often is when it saved me during one of the hardest times of my life.
.
It was what I would define as my “rock bottom”. Not a single event per say...but a multitude of events leading up to it.
.
Let’s just say I lived in a world of perfectionism while one of my biggest goals was to be married with kids before age 30.
.
I feel as a woman who wants kids...were always scared that one day it will be too late. And after my last breakup...I felt this hopelessness inside me that I had failed.
.
I still remember sitting in a hotel room at 2am not knowing how I was going to pick myself up again. Something about this one had rocked me to my core. So much so I knew I couldn’t do it alone.
.
I finally got the courage to go to therapy. And that session the next day would change how I treated myself forever.
.
She helped me understand the negative thought patterns and self sabotaging I did to myself. Placing others on pedestals, constantly putting others needs before my own etc. And all of a sudden it was like I was looking back at my life with such clarity. 💫
.
And that reflection is when the true healing began. For the first time, I didn’t try to heal myself by jumping into another relationship.
.
In fact, I jumped in with me. Putting myself first, creating boundaries and discovering what made me happy. Not to mention yoga...DAILY!
.
It hasn’t been an easy or perfect road since but it’s definitely one I’ve had to take alone. And while people are celebrating anniversaries and babies...I’m celebrating 3 years of SELF love!! 😆 and I feel pretty happy with that.
.
Besides...its your struggles that bond you with humanity. My past traumas are why I can empathize with almost any human being. It’s probably why I’ve cried with my patients and why I feel so deeply connected after I teach. 🙏🏼
.
Morale of story. Embrace the breakdown. It will be the best thing that ever happened to you! Because in that rock bottom...you’ll find the beauty that keeps your soul alive. 🦋

On this Veteran’s Day, LifeForce Yoga would like to send a heartfelt “Thank You” to all of our veterans & their families for the countless sacrifices made on a daily basis. Being the daughter of a soldier & the sister of a sailor who has been awarded many honors for his medical service in combat, I have seen how work circumstances can begin to take a toll on the service member & the family.
Today, we share a story of inspiration and hope. Dan is a combat veteran & when a yoga teacher friend told him he needed yoga in his life he responded, “You’re f***ing crazy.” Eventaully Dan found himself on a mat. During his second class we was struggling with Warrior I as his leg prosthetics dug into his back. Now, he’s a soldier, he wasn't going to punk out. He had a decision to make. “Can I just try this with my legs off?” That was a big deal for him, no one ever got to see him without his legs, however, his frustration overrode his shame and he removed the prosthetics. “I kept telling myself, I’m a warrior. I can do this pose. And there, as I was trying to figure out how to get my hips into the correct position, I mentally replayed Anna’s cue I hadn’t understood the day before: “Root down to rise up.” I imagined roots growing down through my body into the earth. Now, I’m a dude. I shoot guns. I eat meat. I’m very much a guy’s guy. I’m not what you’d call hippie-dippy. But what happened in that moment lit me up from the inside out. As I rooted down into my yoga mat, I could literally feel the earth send this bolt of energy up through my body. Tears streamed down my face. It was as if the earth was saying, “Dan, where have you been the past 10 years?” After that, I couldn’t get enough yoga.” After his third yoga class, Dan signed-up for yoga teacher training & became a Baptiste Yoga teacher in 2014, nearly 10 years after losing both legs in combat. He travels the world sharing his experience and promoting that yoga is for “every body”, he especially encourages veterans to take up the practice.

Sunday Scaries is a real thing. When you feel anxiety building as you anticipate stressors and demands waiting for you at work or school on Monday.

Here’s what I do when the Sunday Scaries bubble up;
.
1 Sunday afternoon gentle flow yoga, (and/or Monday morning fun flow yoga to start the week off right!)
.
2 meditation. .
Focus on your breath. Breathing deeply, say “I am in the present moment. I have arrived right where I need to be. I am safe. I am home. There is no yesterday or tomorrow. I am right here, right now.” - with thanks to Thich Nhat Hanh
.
By taking one small action, and then one more small action... towards getting stuff done is all you need to do. .
*you’re doing the best that you can*

Monumental and scary tasks can be conquered by just showing up.
Breaking it down, taking one tiny baby step at a time. .
Namaste 🙏🏻

How do you handle your Sunday Scaries?

Depression affects women and men, all races, nationalities, and classes, every gender and orientation. Yoga can help. The theory is that along with increasing the production of serotonin, yoga’s emphasis on mindfulness and non-judgmental focus on the present moment helps practitioners develop the skills to overcome depression.
