On this Veteran’s Day, LifeForce Yoga would like to send a heartfelt “Thank You” to all of our veterans & their families for the countless sacrifices made on a daily basis. Being the daughter of a soldier & the sister of a sailor who has been awarded many honors for his medical service in combat, I have seen how work circumstances can begin to take a toll on the service member & the family.
Today, we share a story of inspiration and hope. Dan is a combat veteran & when a yoga teacher friend told him he needed yoga in his life he responded, “You’re f***ing crazy.” Eventaully Dan found himself on a mat. During his second class we was struggling with Warrior I as his leg prosthetics dug into his back. Now, he’s a soldier, he wasn't going to punk out. He had a decision to make. “Can I just try this with my legs off?” That was a big deal for him, no one ever got to see him without his legs, however, his frustration overrode his shame and he removed the prosthetics. “I kept telling myself, I’m a warrior. I can do this pose. And there, as I was trying to figure out how to get my hips into the correct position, I mentally replayed Anna’s cue I hadn’t understood the day before: “Root down to rise up.” I imagined roots growing down through my body into the earth. Now, I’m a dude. I shoot guns. I eat meat. I’m very much a guy’s guy. I’m not what you’d call hippie-dippy. But what happened in that moment lit me up from the inside out. As I rooted down into my yoga mat, I could literally feel the earth send this bolt of energy up through my body. Tears streamed down my face. It was as if the earth was saying, “Dan, where have you been the past 10 years?” After that, I couldn’t get enough yoga.” After his third yoga class, Dan signed-up for yoga teacher training & became a Baptiste Yoga teacher in 2014, nearly 10 years after losing both legs in combat. He travels the world sharing his experience and promoting that yoga is for “every body”, he especially encourages veterans to take up the practice.
