While I have discovered that I’m perfectly capable of pressing up into handstand, I am still incapable of doing it during practice. What gives? Well, an asana in isolation is quite different than the same asana within a series. Everything becomes a bit more complicated and a lot more valuable when there’s connection involved.

I am not a naturally flexible person and my back is probably one of my least flexible areas, which means lots of back focused stretches for this girl. This pose is nice because I am a sucker for inversions and gravity does some of the stretching for me 🙈

Simon Borg-Olivier. Simon is the founder of Yoga Synergy. He studied with Pattabhi Jois, TKV Desikachar and BKS Iyengar, he has an MSc in Molecular biology and a degree in Physiotheraphy. Simon is my teacher’s teacher and he’s awesome! No one I’ve ever met articulates the deeper workings of the human body and it’s (entirely scientific) connection to spirit quite like Simon does. He also articulated his own anatomy in ways that, if I hadn’t seen them first hand, seem to be simply impossible. I was hugely honored a couple of years ago when Simon agreed, in the dead of winter, to mission out into the forest for this photo shoot. A huge ‘Thank You’ goes to Jim Harrington for introducing me to this beautiful world of Synergy, movement culture and the deeper world of yogic thought. Oh, and for introducing us all to his teacher.

Forward fold is an amazing way to open the hamstrings, help the low back, decompress the spine/neck strengthen the feet and ankles, and stretch the caves - when done correctly. Unfortunately, when it’s done wrong, it can lead to hamstring pulls/tear, low back pain/injury, and even neck problems. Because there is a “goal” in this posture (aka touch the ground), many people cheat by dumping or rounding into the low back. This increases the risk injury. A great way to prevent this is to do it with proper form as shown above and put your hands on blocks (or anything high enough, even a chair, to keep your back straight).
