Chaturanga: the pose you love to hate until you can do it, and then you feel like a total goddess warrior every time and want to put at least 50 in every practice. Yep, I love me a chaturanga. But it took me nearly two years to get a proper form one (though obviously I spent the first year doing bad form ones because 🙄🤷‍♀️). So here are my tips to get you there:
1. Doing bad form chaturangas WILL NOT build the strength you need to do good form ones. Long holds (2-5min) in bound headstand was the game changer for me. Knees down is also a good option.
2. If you cannot do a good form one, please please please put your knees down. Rotator cuff injuries are for life my friends 😢. If your form deteriorates, there is no shame in switching half way through a practice either
3. The key to getting the 90 degree bend in your elbows which makes this pose 👌 is to think FORWARD rather than down. In both the full and the half pose, you need to shift your weight forward before lowering. Video yourself and you’ll see the difference
4. The next element of good form is keeping one straight line from shoulders to ankles as you lift/lower. You can see I was not doing this in the ‘then’ part of the video 😬
5. Elbows in 💪
6. When you are flowing, don’t forget to treat this as a pose in and of itself: there is nothing worse than a drive-by swooping chaturanga. Hold for a breath. Crikey, hold for a couple of breaths! When I’m flowing, I always hold at 90 degrees. When I’m repping out (as per the video), then I’ll go chest to floor .

I accept my flaws: I'm a terrible procrastinator. I have a temper when I'm hungry. I don't wash my face every night before bed.. BUT I do believe in myself and I owe every ounce of physical progress to that. I love tackling things that scare the poo out of me - call me an adrenaline junkie, or someone who needs hobbies, hi. Either way, this year I've found myself at the bottom of many, many burpees wondering how the heck I was going to get myself up. I've found myself lifting weights, snatching, pressing, pushing and swinging weight that I never would've touched a year ago... literally, no. Most people set out to lose weight, tone their chubbies or achieve the mythical beach body. I set out to scare myself, to embrace the fear of failure, embarrassment and disappointment. I've gained weight, lots of really funny embarrassing gym stories and a heck of a lot of confidence. You control the perception of what you can and can't do. You control the things you say and believe about yourself - make sure you're fueling the right fires 😘

Listen to your body it's telling you a lot and it's the most important key to your healthy life 〰 side note :: watch more sunsets over Netflix ✨💫

Today we spontaneously booked Singapore for 4 days before we will leave for Germany 🙌🏼 Probably we will have to live on cookies and water to be able to afford the little journey 😅 but we are really excited to see this city 🌃 .

Inspired by my recent homework. I’ve decided to start a pose of the week. In order for me to apply my knowledge of the poses and also practice those tricky Sanskrit names I find so hard to pronounce.. (if you’ve ever heard a wolverhampton accent you’d understand 😂)
This weeks Pose:

EXTENDED TRIANGLE POSE 🔺
Sanskrit Name: TRIKONASANA
Pronounciation: trih-koh-nah-sah-nah

GENERAL FORM:
🔹Standing with feet apart (heel to arch alignment arms at a T bend and from the waist
🔹Bringing your hand to the calf, ankle, holding onto your big toe or resting on a block (if the hamstrings are tight)
🔹 Working on keeping the legs straight and lengthening through the spine. (Don’t compress the neck and reach high to the ceiling!)
🔹 Avoid rounding the upper back, you should be bending sideways, not forward or backward. Think spine parallel to the ground and chest facing the wall! ———————————————————————————-
BENEFITS:
🔹 Strengthens the legs and back
🔹Improves flexibility of the hips, hamstrings and spine.
🔹Improves digestion.

1. Meinen ersten Yogakurs habe ich als sehr engagierte Journalistenschülerin zum Ausgleich bei Y8 (Sivananda Yoga) in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel gemacht. Ganz in Weiß. In der Rishikesh-Reihe stand auch der Fisch auf dem Programm.
2. Als ich das erste Mal Sonnengrüße während meines Teacher Trainings bei @power_yoga_germany ansagen sollte, war ich so aufgeregt, dass meine damalige Lehrerin Qbi mich erstmal an die Hand genommen hat, um mich zu erden.
3. Der Mann des Herzens und ich haben unsere Hochzeit innerhalb von drei Wochen organisiert, um uns genau ein Jahr nach unserem Kennenlernen an der Elbe das Jawort geben zu können. Das fiel uns eben erst drei Wochen vorher mit dem Heiratsantrag ein🙃
4. In meiner Familie hat niemand der Erwachsenen außer mir etwas für Yoga übrig.
5. Mein Mann steht trotzdem jeden Morgen mit mir auf, um "Dehnübungen" zu machen😉
6. Bevor ich anfing 2014 fürs Happy Mind Mag über Yoga zu schreiben, habe ich die Lady Gagas, Richard Geres und George Clooneys (an seine langen Wimpern denke ich heute noch manchmal☺️) dieser Welt interviewt.
7. Ich habe mal ein französisches Mädchen vorm Ertrinken im Indischen Ozean gerettet. Sie hieß Anaïs.

Its been 6 weeks now since I've been back at teaching yoga. I'm currently on maternity leave with my 14 week old baby boy. Two months ago my house was flooded with level 3 sewer (shit) water and it ruined the lower level of my house. We've been living in a construction site ever since.
As yoga teachers we often have a theme for each of our yoga classes. I personally love theming and storytelling in my classes. I love pairing a relevant story or teaching with the perfect found song. I love teaching yoga with all of my heart and in the last 6 weeks its often been the only part of my week where I don't feel like a complete failure. I actually feel like I know what I'm doing. Nothing will humble you and bring you to your knees more than being a new mama all over again. Its completely different this time around with a three year old boy. Lets just say I am in it. I am in the thick of it. I've been living in a construction site for almost two months and its been incredibly challenging.
A couple weeks ago I got mad. LIke really pissed off angry mad. So mad I wasn't able to calm myself down. I think I was beyond sleep deprived because I'm not sleeping at night with my newborn and during the day I'm home to the sounds of construction. What I was left feeling afterwards was that I feel like a fraud as a yoga teacher. You see, I literally ask my students to stay in the incredibly challenging parts of the class and use their breath to calm them. I tell them that the parts of class that are the most challenging are designed that way so they can practice staying in the fire rather than running when it gets difficult. I talk about how using these skills on our mats will help us in life next time we get really angry.
And yet, I can't seem to do that myself in my own life. I get angry. I get pissed off. I'm not always nice. I have to ask for grace and patience multiple times a day. Who am I to teach these things when I don't live by them myself? This is why I have been quiet. I don't feel inspired or inspirational when I am sleep deprived and living in a construction site. I don't feel that I have anything to offer others.

Those of you that read my weekly blog posts about what my asana practice looked like the week before (which I always now post on Tuesday mornings, so click the link in my bio to read today’s post) will know that Rocket Yoga has been a big feature of my practice over the past few months. Mainly because there are local classes at good times for me with teachers I really rate, and the classes are at an intensity/level which I am looking for. But I must say that I find the set sequence a bit boring (don’t come after me Rocket Yoga police 👮‍♀️😬). So I have been keeping my eye out for vinyasa level 2 classes which also fit that bill. And tonight I found an excellent one. 90 minutes, super sweaty, interesting enough sequencing (though obviously @dylanwerneryoga has ruined that for me from any other teacher), and a teacher who was still really focused on form and breath. Fun fun fun and a wonderful treat for a Tuesday night 💛
