How I first learned... #EkaPadaKoundinyasana aka #EPK

1. With knees and feet together squat down. Create a deep twist, reach your hands across to your right side and down on floor. Hands placed shoulder width apart
2. Hollow out your belly creating space for the twist. Place right thigh on both elbows (or just left if you're feeling strong). Find your chaturanga arms
3. Pitch weight toward crown of head. Reach through to counterbalance your legs and lift feet. Balance. (I break down side crow in an earlier post if you're looking for extra details on that)
4. Unglue your legs and slowly lift top leg up and away. Deeply engage core. Press firmly away from the floor.
5. *I extend my legs evenly* As you straighten and extend the top leg move the bottom at the same pace
6. Find your deepest expression and extension. I find the most balance while playing with my hips and wrists. Trying tucking and extending the tailbone to find balance point and ahifting weight from fingers to palms. Keep reaching the head to counter the legs.

It’s #TriYogaTuesday with the #TriYogaSchool team & this week our lesson is on #lowlunge or #anjaneyasana 👩‍🎓 Low lunge releases tension in the hips (especially the hip flexors), stretches the hamstrings, quads & groin, & also strengthens the knees. It helps to develop mental focus & can open the chest & shoulders. 🎓
Low Lunge Alignment Cues:
1. The back knee rests on the mat as you ground down into the 3 corners of the front foot (the heel, base of the big toe, & base of the pinky toe). You can have the toes of the back foot tucked under & push down into the big toe, or leave the toes untucked with the top of the foot on the mat
2. Magnetise the feet together by imagining drawing them towards each other
3. Keep your front knee stacked over the ankle
4. Sink the hips forwards & tuck your tailbone down
5. Draw the lower belly in back towards the spine & keep the chest lifted
6. Think about extending throughout the spine & creating length
7. Bring the shoulder blades down the back & the shoulders soft
8. The arms reach up & back - Keep the fingers active & think about the energy traveling upwards through the torso as you sink down with the hips
9. The gaze, or drishti, is forwards, or up

Happy Thanksgiving Week! Continuing with our month of gratitude - this week is all about gratitude for our own efforts. We may find it easy to thank others but neglect to thank ourselves for the work we put in to achieve our goals. So do something nice for yourself this week - maybe it’s one of our mindfulness practices from the new blog!

🍎 It’s week 5️⃣ of #TriYogaTuesday — the latest offering of #TriYogaSchool 🍎

This week we journey into #Anjaneyasana (one of my fave poses to say) also known as #LowLunge
.
. 🔻 There are many variations of this pose and as a teaching team, we will cover several of them. .
🔻 In my video I am demonstrating Low Lunge with back knee extended. This is a basic and super valuable standing pose. Regular practice increases whole body strength and stamina, plus flexibility in the legs and shoulders.
.
✏️ For the simplest entrance, start in mountain pose at the top of your mat. Fold forward, touching the ground, and take a long step back. Bend your front knee toward 90 degrees. Squiggle your back foot farther back until you are as deep in the front knee as you can sustain, and your back leg is straight.
.
✏️ Draw your upper body back so that your shoulders are lined up over your pelvis. Be certain to engage your core - deep belly up and in - to reduce the lumbar flexion and increase stretch in the back hip psoas instead. .
✏️ Reach your arms up and overhead. If you can maintain the foundation you have built, press your palms together. Hands together or apart, reach UP through the elbows, wrists, and fingers as you root down through the pelvis, legs, and feet.
.
✏️ Stay for a few breaths, at least through the first wave of fatigue. When that wave arrives, re-strengthen your legs, balancing the effort front to back. Re-engage your core and reach up. .
✏️ To release the pose, step your back foot forward and pause in a forward fold. Feel the sense of accomplishment from staying solid when your mind told you to bail! Now do the other side.
