Lucky to have @edstagram4 come back out to grove street where it all started for him and stop by the compund tonight to work with @zakpalek of @ohptraining on some FRC protocols. Ed was drafted by the @cflredblacks earlier this week and came in to get some prep work done before the start of camp. It's great to have Zak running his company out of the gorilla compound, he's FRC certified and is great with injury prehab/rehab. He's definitely a valuable asset to all of our athletes here. It's Wednesday, that can only mean 1 thing, dynamic squat day. This is 435 plus average and light bands for 8 sets of 2. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if your strength coach isn't strong, get a new strength coach, they don't have to have world class strength but they do need to be strong. If they aren't strong how do you expect them to make you stronger? G check your strength coach, pull their card and see of they're about that life. Do they just train athletes because it's the "cool" thing to do or because it's better than having a real job, or do they actually live to make athletes better? The decision tree I developed to deal with supplements. Far from perfect, but generally works pretty well.

1. Safe: most that make it to standard markets are. At Least when taken at appropriate dosage.

2. Work: this is very, very, very complex. Details for another day/post perhaps.

3. Food: can it be achieved in similar concentrations through normal food. This is almost always the preferred option, when possible.
4. $$$: "Is it worth it" completely depends on you and your finances combined with the value of the benefit. I.e 3% improvement for $100 a week = worth it to MLB player, but not for college kid.

It's never too early to start developing athletes as long as you have a long term plan, this is Hunter, our youngest athlete, he's 10 years old, his training is all centered around body weight exercises, GPP work and teaching good positions. But most importantly is what ever he wants to do that day. I don't mind training kids this young but I always tell the parents they have to want to be here, Hunter always shows up with a big smile on his face ready to get after it! Yo football coaches, stop making your players (especially lineman) run for their conditioning!They aren't built to run long distances! For fuck sakes 40yds is a highlight on ESPN so why are they running gassers and grey hounds?! Strength and conditioning should be done at the same time! This is the last sets of 8 doubles done with 355 on the cambered bar, 250lbs of band and 90lbs of chain, each set done with 20-30 sec rest! Now if you had 5 offensive lineman (that are bigger, tougher and more athletic than me) that could speed squat 695lbs at the top for 8 doubles with 20 sec rest you're gonna win a lot of games! Your biggest problem as a play caller is gonna be getting the plays in fast enough! You'll run the other team off the field in the first half! Our athletes never run more than 10yds at a time in our off season, why? Because all they do is run during the session, no coach let's players walk. They run from drill to drill, run while you're in the drill, run back to the huddle, then after that get on the goal line and run more after practice. Take a break from the running! It's a very special relationship that's developed between a strength coach and an athlete. To an outsider it's impossible to see but the coach and the athlete know the gym isn't just a place to lift...equipment like the squat rack and deadlift platform become an escape from the stress of being an athlete, student, son/daughter, brother/sister, young adult in a complicated world. The bench becomes a therapists couch. And as a strength coach you learn everything about the athletes life, you become their life raft when the storms come. It's impossible to explain to someone that isn't the athlete or the coach but I'm grateful that this is my profession. New toys to make our athletes even better!! We got our second fatpad for our utility bench cause after doing your main movement on the fatpad it sucks having to move to a regular pad for accessory work. We also got 3 bowties and as you can see Dozer loves his bowtie! @thompsonfatpad has done so much for me as a coach with all the free information he puts out and has done so much for the sport I try to support him anyway I can! Spectacular day today with my longtime friend since we were 4 years old. Last March on my birthday I opened up my big mouth and said we should do 50 consecutive sets of stairs. So here we are celebrating. Thank you to everyone that came out and joined us throughout the morning to do stairs with us. Every time someone showed up I got this surge of energy that helped keep me going. Hmmmmm perhaps we should make this an annual stair challenge event?

In terms of volume, intensities, tonnage, etc; however you track and control the amount of work done, when you examine training on a macrocyclic level the training should be manageable but difficult. Don't fool yourself into thinking just because your strength coach can make you puke after every training session and you can't walk out of the gym that you're training properly. There's a time and a place to push athletes to that point, but the coach has to he very carefull how and when they push their athletes there. Louie will tell you the most important thing Mel Siff ever told him was that athletes should never train minimally, that's for pussies. And never train maximally, that's for idiots.
