The Art of Fun! Giselle used to teach swing dance at the Spotted Cat on Frenchman. Many of these musicians tour with big acts all over the world now. Here’s a bunch of us just playing in the streets a few years ago at Jazzfest.
There are a lot of valuable skills one can have in this world but they are useless if we forget how to play. Music and dance are two forms that promise endless learning. Everything I have ever learned in these realms have continued to be built upon and given me endless joy.
I’ve heard that some public schools teach swing and other partner dancing to kids. It is so good for kids, it helps them learn etiquette and gender relations, how to communicate non-verbally. These are so deeply valuable way beyond any dance floor. Musicians learn how to listen, how to support others by backing them up, how to let others shine, and how to step up when it’s your turn to shine.
I love the digital world and it certainly has it’s own rules of engagement, etiquette, and can also be quite fun and educational... but it is not “in the body”.
Salsa makes you move with your partner but swing makes you bump, push and pull. Both music and dance understand the sublime relationship between tension and resolve.
I miss New Orleans no matter where I am in the world, but the best I can do is bring it with me everywhere.
Let’s swing and play in the streets, it makes everything else in life that much more enjoyable!
