Yesterday I said goodbye to my friend and B Battery #460thParachuteFieldArtillery #17thAirborne #WWIIVeteran, Mike Rock. I met Mike at the #17thAirborneDivisionScions reunion in Lancaster two weeks ago. I was blessed to have been able to spend what little time with him that I did, pushing him in his wheelchair to show him the display that my reenacting unit set up. I ferment him making it a point to tell me that he loved the D ration (Hershey) bars that they received while they were overseas fighting the war.
Anybody who knows me knows that I absolutely soak up anything and everything that veterans could possibly want to share with me about their time in the service, and that I absolutely treasure any time that I get to spend with veterans (of any era), no matter how brief. It was truly a blessing that Mike Rock shared some of his previous time with me, of all people, and I will never forget the short hours we spent together, not the world and wisdom that he decided to share with me during his last two weeks of his life here in Earth.
I ask that you please keep Mike's family in your thoughts and prayers as he moves on to the next drop zone. #AirborneAlltheWay!
