Dunkirk (2017) 7.3/10 Recommended.
While there are many things I love about this movie, I still think that Nolan had the potential to improve it in many ways. To begin with, I want to acknowledge his showing-not-telling technique of filming. Instead of using dialogue to explain what's going on in the movie, he used the characters' actions and emotions to express whose side everyone was on. I didn't think the acting was anything to rave about, but that was due to Nolan's lack of focus on a certain character. He gave us a look at every character and jumped back and forth through different conflicts. Eventually, he drew them all together, which gave leverage to the ending. Unfortunately, I felt like even though these few features were amazing, there could have been a lot more to the movie. For starters, the running time should have been longer. Even though it was already boring at times, I feel that there should have been a focus on the antagonist characters, too. Nolan is known for building strong villians in his movie, and I felt that we knew little about the Germans and therefore didn't fully embrace the conflict in the movie. Don't get me wrong, this film did in fact exceed my expectations, but I hoped that it would blow them away. There were a few scenes and shots that left me in awe, and for that reason, I recommend this movie. I doubt Dunkirk will gain a lot of Oscar attention. I think it will get a Cinematography nom, but anything else will surprise me. Overall, Dunkirk had its ups and downs. The storytelling technique and the cinematography amazed me, but othet than that, the film was generally mediocre. Unfortunately, it will be forgotten in a few years, but it was definitely a good cinematic experience. I was disappointed, and I think this is one of Nolan's worst movies, but I still recommend giving it a watch. Dunkirk's story isn't as common, so I still applaud Nolan for expanding on the concept. #dunkirk #movie #review #moviereviews #moviereview #christophernolan #harrystyles #tomhardy #ww2 #ww2movies #war #warmovie #france #germany #nazis
