Maybe pantsers are on to something.

Who knew scarves could be such a good way to try out new hairstyles?! Should I go for a bob? Yes or No? Cast your votes now!⠀
.⠀
This silly pic got me thinking about appearances and the best way to introduce the appearance of your Main Character (MC) in your book.⠀
.⠀
I’m not really a fan of MCs that make a habit of describing themselves - unless there’s a good reason for them to be considering their appearance.⠀
.⠀
Take this example: “I flicked my straight, blonde hair over my shoulder.”⠀
.⠀
Can you see the problem? There’s really no good reason your MC would notice that her hair was blonde OR straight. Think about it: how often do you think about your hair color every day? ⠀
.⠀
Now you might be thinking of dying your hair... in which case you probably think about hair color a lot! And if your character is thinking of a change, or has recently made a change, THAT would be a good reason to include it.⠀
.⠀
So I started thinking about a few natural and relevant ways you can weave in descriptions of your main character.⠀
Ask yourself:⠀
• does she have a good reason to compare herself to someone else?⠀
• does she dislike or is she frustrated by an aspect of her appearance, and is it affecting her emotions or decisions?⠀
• does she ever get mistaken for someone else?⠀
• does her appearance mean that people ever treat her differently (positively or negatively)?⠀
• does one of the other characters have a good reason to be talking about her appearance?⠀
• is she involved in something where appearances are important?⠀
.⠀
If you can think of specific examples of books you’ve read or stories you’ve written where a MC’s appearance was mentioned (well or poorly) let me know below!⠀

I'm always warning my tutees never to do a blanket replacement using the 'Find and replace' function in Word when they are working on an essay, and here's why! I thought I could risk it when substituting the name 'Justin' with the name 'Josh' when editing the first draft of my novel. However, even replacing a word as unusual as 'Justin' can lead to issues! #proofreading #writing #words #lovelanguage #language #amwriting #editingtips #writingtips #bewordaware

This is my mantra of the next few weeks #editing

Are you a perfectionist? I’m a perfectionist. ⠀

I also have anxiety issues, so when I feel overwhelmed by something, my brain shuts down—just goes blank. This is hugely problematic when I’m trying to write.⠀

This #infographic from @hennekeduistermaat gives some excellent advice on avoiding the pitfalls of #perfectionism, and many of them can be applied in a larger sense—not just to writing.⠀

My favorite was this: “Perfectionism stops you from trying. Start somewhere, and then improve. You can’t figure it all out in your mind first.”⠀

Literally the only thing that got me going sometimes was typing stream-of-consciousness onto the page until I got to my point. And then I’d go back to the beginning and rewrite the introduction after the fact. It works! You just have to START. Anywhere.⠀

For the full graphic, see our November link round-up on the #blog—link in the bio!⠀

From my Jesus gift (see recent blog post) to annual goal planning, my mind has been thinking about what the new year will hold.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With a baby on the way, I know this year will look different, but that doesn’t mean it can’t hold intention.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When do you start making plans for the upcoming year? How do you do it?

We're always going to hit that moment of self-doubt but the main thing is not to quit!

Your words come from your soul so they obviously mean something to you.

Today, I'm thinking about what this adventure is teaching me.⠀

I'm having so much fun writing a new chapter every day, it's absolutely making me grow as a writer and reminding me that no matter how hard you work on something, stories are meant to be read so getting them out in the world when they are good enough--and not getting hung up on perfection--is key.⠀

Writing Tip #17: Revise/Edit AFTER Your First Complete Draft

So often I hear this question: "When should I revise my work? Should I be focused on editing the grammar and syntax as I go along? Should I edit after I finish a chapter? A scene? A paragraph?"

First, let me say that different writers write and edit differently. However, I highly suggest that you do not edit AT ALL until your first draft is completed. •

Editing IS important and this cannot be emphasized enough. However, trying to edit as you write can often be detrimental to your creative processes. When you are first writing it is important to simply write, to let the words go, and get the sentences out. When you first write, you do not want to be encumbered by thoughts of grammatical error or plot holes.

I am not saying that grammar and consistency are not important, they are, but not when you first start drafting. The point of the first draft is simply to create. Once you have finished the first draft, then it is time to go back and edit.

I suggest first editing chapter by chapter. Check and make sure every chapter has a fully developed arc and correct your grammar. After that, do a second revision to check that all of your chapters flow into one another and that the story is complete with no gaps.
