Things I found on the ground today:
A lost letter postmarked on August 23rd, 1968, from the U.S. Army in Fort Knox, Kentucky, to a woman who lived in San Diego. The letter reads as follows:
YOUR (you're) PROBABLY WONDERING WHY I'M WRITING TO YOU AGAIN. WELL, I GUESS IT'S BECAUSE YOU WROTE ME A LETTER AND SO I DECIDED TO ANSWER YOU BACK. YOU'LL HAVE TO FORGIVE MY HANDWRITING, BUT, I'M TRYING TO WRITE THIS SCRIBTURE IN VERY DIM LIGHT. YOU SHOULD BE GLAD YOU'RE NOT DOWN IN THIS STATE OF KENTUCKY AT THE PRESENT TIME. IT'S ONLY 104 DEGREES IN THE SHADE. IT'S FAR FROM THE SPACIOUS STATE OF CALIFORNIA. OR MAYBE IT'S ALL IN MY MIND. WOULD YOU BELIEVE I ALMOST WAS COURT-MARSHALED FOR FALLING ASLEEP AT WORK LAST WEEK. THE ARMY JUST DOESN'T SEEM TO REALIZE THAT I NEED MORE THAN FOUR HOURS SLEEP A NIGHT.
I'M GLAD TO HEAR YOU'RE WORKING FOR YOUR MOM. MAYBE I CAN HELP OUT IF YOU NEED ANY (?) OR ANYTHING ELSE. OH, GLAD TO HEAR YOU HAVE A COMPANION FROM CENTRAL AMERICA! GOOD LUCK TO THE BOTH OF YOU. WELL, BEST SHAG FOR NOW.
P.S. PLEASE WRITE BACK
P.S.S. I HOPE YOU LIKE THIS PHOTO OF ME "FLYING HUN?" So how interesting to find and read this letter between two strangers from almost 50 years ago only to wonder what their deeper relationship was or what the backstory was or if they ever saw each other again. Imagine if every writer woke up to a letter like this at their feet and had to write based on the information they read... I personally love that the woman took a lover from Central America and that the back of the envelope was littered with things like "FLOWER POWER" and "SOCK IT TO THE HARPER VALLEY P.T.A." ✉️📬✒️🌼 #Army #1968 #Letter #LostLetter #FoundGlimpseIntoAnothersPast #WritersDream
