“The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10)

My request to my husband is that if I still fit in this dress when I die, I want to be buried in it.
I was born Melissa Catherine Laux and for two decades went by the nickname 'Missy’. Through a series of events after coming to salvation in Christ, I began going by a new name. The name ‘Phoebe’ signified 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Verse 18 goes on to state “all this is from God…” The revealing of this name happened of all ways possible through a bird… an Eastern Phoebe bird. I later also learned that 'Phoebe’ is a servant of the Church mentioned in Romans 16:1.

When I saw the dress; I knew it was perfect. The colorful birds darting across the navy blue backdrop carried so much more meaning than the designer could have intended. The birds reminded me of the delicate Eastern Phoebe and the symbolism of new life in Christ, along with the imagery of flying away to glory so beautifully expressed in the hymn by Albert E. Brumley “I'll fly away”. Father, thank you for the sobering reminders in your word of our finitieness. Thank you also for the countless reassurances of our true home. Help to shift our gaze from that which is temporal to that which is eternal, that we might live with wisdom and resolve to spend ourselves with the strength you provide, proclaiming your gospel until our dying breath. Amen. “When the shadows of this life have gone,
I'll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I'll fly away

I'll fly away, O Glory,
I'll fly away.
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away.” #death #life #hymns #regeneration #faith #hopeingod #christianity #writeforhisglory #christianwritersofinstagram #hope #goodnews

Take heart! All God’s promises are yes and amen in Christ. Lord, how beautiful are your works in our lives. Let great and mighty things continue to unfold each day as we behold you and walk with you.

“And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.” (Genesis 1:29)

I recall beginning to view the world around me differently soon after God caused me to be born again. Kind of like that moment you realize that your parents are human; that they make mistakes, fail, and don't know the answer to everything. The magnitude of this paradigm shift was immeasurable! Suddenly, I could not not see God's fingerprint everywhere, everyday.
Instead of viewing things or people to serve me, I was awakened to see how they all serve Almighty God, testifying to his glory, reflecting his power and nature (Romans 1:20). These good gifts were not made to be an end to themselves, but to point to the gift giver himself.
For all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made (John 1:3-8). God in his kindness graced me with a reminder of this on an ordinary Friday night chopping cabbage. Staring down at the spiny interwoven waves of color intricately arrayed in a hue of rich purple, praise boiled up in my heart. There I stood in awe of God, thanking him for red cabbage, of all things and weeping joyously that he thought to create it that we might have it as food to nourish our bodies. This is significant; however silly it may sound. If I find myself weeping joyously over red cabbage, and praising God for creating it, I am confident that he is alive in my heart and on this Earth.

Look closely this week; the living and true God whom we are served by and serve just may reveal his goodness and glory to you through something as ordinary as red cabbage. God be praised!

“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable” (Psalm 145:3)

During a recent family hike at Percy Warner Park, God in his kindness allowed us to stumble upon this adorable Southeastern baby box turtle. All I could think about afterwards was how monumental the 3,000+ acres of forest was in comparison to this miniature turtle. This little chap will never come to an end of surveying the floors of this fertile foliage!

We are served by and serve the true and living God, whose good word tells us, has greatness that is unsearchable (Psalm 145:3)...and there is more!

The riches of Christ are unsearchable (Ephesians 3:10)

The number of his years are unsearchable (Job 36:26)

His judgements are unsearchable (Romans 11:33)

His understanding is unsearchable (Isaiah 40:28)

Not only does this humble me when I am tempted to distrust God, or foolishly think my way or plans are superior; but it gifts me with a strange assurance that my life is in the best possible hands. Where else can you find a God immeasurable and unsearchable in greatness who is mindful of man and cares for him (Psalm 8:3-4)? Let us remember this week that we are mere baby box turtles and the expansive eternal woods of God and his word are awaiting our exploration!

Well, my stomach has total butterflies as I post this. However, I'd love for you to hear the bigger God story about my first book, which you can now pre-order on my website. Also, if anyone would like to help me get the word out, I would be so grateful. Message me if you are interested, please. Thank you Kathleen D. "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing." (James 1:22-25)

I received this journal from my mom and originally had plans to make it a gratitude journal. As I pondered the verse displayed on the front, 2 Corinthians 5:7, "for we walk by faith and not by sight", I decided otherwise.
-
I all too frequently walk by my feelings, circumstances, selfish ambitions, and desires for comfort and control.
-
This journal would be a weekly reminder to not only listen to the words of eternal life, but walk in obedience to them. In essence: becoming a doer of the word. After reading a passage, I can ask myself how does this passage call me to walk, live out, conduct myself in relation to God, others, and in the world? How can I allow this to shape my life? My thoughts, words, actions, motives? How can I seek to apply what I've read in a specific way, today or this week; and trust God more deeply in the process?
-
I wrote the following on each page:
1.Today, Lord helping and spirit empowering, I will walk by faith by...
2.Share any outcome of action...
3.Subsequent Scriptures relating to action...
-
To walk by faith means to live my life according to the realities laid out in Scripture, not according to present realities. To set my mind and have my actions accord with the future hope laid up for me in heaven (Colossians 1:4-5)
-
Lord helping, may we not hear and forget, but hear and act. As we set our minds on things that are above, we will be renewed in our true purpose for being here: "to proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9)

Isn't it beautiful that God says He can give you beauty for ashes? We love that. I think we concentrate on the beauty, but unless you give Him your ashes, you don't get the beauty. There is a substitution plan here. There is a plan where you give Him your ashes. Then He, in return, gives you His beauty. (M. Hickley) .
