A few years back at Boston Comic-Con, myself and my good friend @reed_hill_draws got to meet the great and now sadly late Bernie Wrightson (Co-creator of Swamp Thing, illustrator of numerous seminal works, including my favorite novel of all time, Stephen King's The Stand) and chat for a few minutes.
Now, whenever I meet anyone of note at conventions that I admire, I try to come up with at least something reasonably interesting to tell or ask them ahead of time so as not to look like a completely speechless idiot....and if there was one thing I'd ever want to ask Bernie Wrightson, it's what art tools he'd most recommend to a fellow artist looking to learn and experiment. He suggested a Gillott #291 mapping pen point for inking, which is what he used on his illustrated adaptation of Frankenstein (a truly beautiful work which I highly recommend). As soon as I could, I ordered some for myself. I never got a chance to use them, though, till now.
Though it's been a while since I've used crow quills, and I don't think they work all that well on watercolor paper, I can still tell there's a project just right for them in the not too distant future.
