We would be the ones to decide who would be punished. Broken up into groups of ten, we would have to vote on which one of us was going to be executed. And then we... the soldiers, we would be the ones to personally murder our friends. They rolled these little pushcarts past us. I can still hear their creaking wheels. They were full of stones, about the size of your hand, sharp and heavy. Some cried out, pleaded with us, begged liked children. Some, like Baburin, simply knelt there silently, on their knees, staring right into my face as I brought the rock down into his.
I love this book. It's brutal, and feels painfully real. The film is definitely one of the most disappointing adaptations ever (and that's saying something), so please don't base your expectations of the book on it. This is not a fast paced action zombie romp. This is a beautifully well paced collection of (obviously fictional) first hand accounts of people and society dealing with a zombie outbreak. It's nearer Band of Brothers than 28 Days Later. I've never encountered anything else in the realm of fiction quite like this book. The Pegg quote on the cover nails it - it's like Max Brooks had seen all of this happen and so knows exactly how it would pan out.
For those of you who have read it, I do also highly recommend either of the audio versions - the abridged was a great condensed edition (about half length), and the later complete edition adds in an expanded cast of excellent actors and actresses worthy of an epic geek-out session.
