Seen above is an unknown Soviet Soldier smashing a nazi propaganda poster that says: "Hitler is the liberator", with his Mosin Nagant rifle after the Liberation of Gatchin in the outskirts of Leningrad, 26 January 1944. Picture was taken by Raphael Mazelev.

By May 10, 1940 the Germans had mobilized about 4.2 million men of the Wehrmacht for the invasion of France and Belgium, but only about 3,000,000 were actually readily available for the operation. This vast amount of manpower in the Wehrmacht alone was divided up into 157 divisions, of which 135 were dog-eared for the operation, but only half of all the divisions organized were combat-ready by 1940. Just 10% of the German military was motorized by that year, mostly relying on and consisting of horse-drawn vehicles. Only 120,000 motorized vehicles compared to the 300,000 fielded by the French were able to be gathered, and of that number just under 2,500 tanks were all that was able to be mustered to constitute the armor necessarily.

A Volkswagen Type 82 Kübelwagen Feldgendarmarie (Military Police) sits in the mud and awaits the order to advance during Operation Citadel, Soviet Union, June 21st, 1943. I'm going to talk about "Operation Citadel" and the Feldgendarmarie but I'd like to talk about a more pressing matter. If your in the UK which I know many of you are I plead that you stay indoors and make sure your family members are ok! This may be the first of many attacks so just stay safe and don't be sorry! Please I beg of you! Stay safe guys! Now back to the normally scheduled caption: Operation Citadel was Germany's last major Operation on the Eastern Front while they still had the upper hand. It was ordered shortly after the fall of Stalingrad and a great deal of pressure was now being put on the Wehrmacht's chest. This would be their last stand for a foothold in the Soviet Union. During the Operation the largest tank battle of the war occurred near Kursk and it resulted in a Soviet victory. There were also many other smaller engagements across the hundreds of miles that the Eastern Front covered. Millions died and the Soviets managed to break the Wehrmacht's back. They did this by throwing thousands and thousands of Soviet soldiers against the Wehrmacht. Although the Wehrmacht were better trained they didn't have the amount of men the Soviets had and their will was broken. The Third Reich's fate was sealed from then on. The Feldgendarmarie were the Wehrmacht's Military Police. They were highly trained and caused lots of fear among civilians as they had no real boundaries against them. They'd control disciplinary actions within the military but also outside of it like dealing with Partisans and more. They also helped hunt for Jews and sometimes executed them! They would also direct traffic and do more domestic work like any normal police officer at the time.

You may ask what use is an inflatable dummy tank in a very real war? Well a lot, if the enemy believes that it’s real. During WW1, Allied forces made use of dummy versions of the British heavy tanks. They were constructed from a wooden framework and covered with painted Hessian cloth. The tracks were non-functional so some were fitted with concealed wheels underneath and were towed from place to place by a pair of horses. Dummy tanks, representing Allied models, were also found to have been constructed by the Germans, even though they deployed only a small number of real tanks. It is possible they were used in training, rather than for military deception. Dummy tanks soon saw significantly more use during #WW2. Military deception is as old as war itself, but the idea the Allied planners came up with represented something new: a mobile, self-contained deception unit capable of staging multimedia illusions on demand. The 1,100 men in the unit were capable of simulating two full divisions(up to 30,000 men)with all the tanks and artillery that the real units might be expected to have. The illusion might discourage the enemy from exploiting a weak spot by making the site seem as if it was heavily defended, or could draw enemy troops away from where real American units were planning an attack. Formed in January of 1944, and sent into action after D-Day, the Ghost Army went to war armed with three types of deception to fool the enemy: visual, sonic and radio. Visual deception was handled by the 603rd Camouflage Engineering Battalion. Originally formed to carry out large-scale camouflage, it was loaded with young artists, architects and designers who now turned their visual talents to a different kind of art. To this purpose, they were equipped with hundreds of inflatable tanks, cannons, trucks, and even aeroplanes that could be used to create dummy tank formations, motor pools, and artillery batteries that looked like the real thing from the air. These decoys were not simply giant balloons, but consisted of a skeleton of inflatable tubes covered with rubberised canvas, an ingenious design which ensured that a single piece of shrapnel could not instantly deflate ------>

USS Bowfin Submarine @ 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor – Honolulu, Hawaii. USS Bowfin (SS-287) is a fleet attack submarine that fought in the Pacific during WWII, and helped to make famous the term, “Silent Service.” Bowfin was launched on December 7, 1942, exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was nicknamed the Pearl Harbor Avenger, so it is fitting that her permanent home is at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Like her namesake - a scrappy, mean-looking fish with powerful jaws, sharp teeth, and a voracious appetite - the Bowfin proved to be a formidable underwater adversary, sinking 44 enemy ships during the war. The Roer River rose to historical prominence in the winter of 1944/1945 when it became an integral part of the German western border defenses. It effectively closed the 25 mile gap in the Siegfried Line which the American advance through Aachen had made. For the 9A a further invasion of Germany to reach the Rhine depended upon the forcing of the Roer River.
Roughly, the Roer River runs parallel to the German frontier from Roermond in the north, where it joins the Meuse River to Düren in the south. It also parallels the Rhine River about 25 miles further east and is an effective barrier to any attack from the west aimed at the Ruhr Industrial Area. The advance to the river had been a slow fight against determined resistance and the enemy was quick to respond to any probing of the east bank. The situation called for the build-up of a powerful attacking force before a crossing could be forced. Detailed plans for the Roer crossing were formulated early in December after elements of the XIX Corps and the XIII Corps in the 9A zone reached the river at Jülich and Linnich. However, the operation was delayed for more than a month by the German Counter Offensive in the Belgian Ardenne.

Sherman tanks of the 1st Canadian Armored Brigade in Italy, advancing towards the Gothic Line, 26 August, 1944.

The brigade took part in the British Eighth Army's assault landing on the toe of Italy in Operation Baytown on September 1943. Its regiments participated in the Battles of Potenza, Termoli, Ortona. During the fourth and final Battle of Monte Cassino in May 1944, the brigade helped break the Gustav Line, crossing the Gari River in support of the 8th Indian Division. Its regiments helped the 1st Canadian Division and the British 78th Division in breaking the Hitler Line. It cooperated with the British XIII Corps in the Battle of Lake Trasimeno. It was active in the crossing of the Arno River and later fought on the Gothic Line.
Combined with the 1st Canadian Infantry Division and 5th Canadian Armoured Division as part of I Canadian Corps, the 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade was moved from the Italian Front and joined the First Canadian Army in Northern Europe at the beginning of 1945. (Photo source - © IWM NA 18051)
