Which do you prefer? 🏃vs 🏋️
Resistance (RT) and aerobic training (AT) are vastly different in terms of the nature of the training stimulus I.e intermittent vs continuous contractions, time skeletal muscle is under load etc. However both have valid reasons as to why you should be doing them.
Fat loss: AT has shown to decrease body WEIGHT more than RT however WEIGHT & FAT LOSS are 2 different outcomes. WEIGHT loss can be done easily and not necessarily good nor does it translate into fat loss. On a diet, the goal should be to burn kcals while sparing as much LBM as possible & while AE can burn through kcals in order to promote WEIGHT loss, RT on the other hand may result in the least amount of WEIGHT loss, however this isn't necessarily bad as these results are often driven by an increase in LBM, the more LBM you have, the higher your RMR, thus changing how many calories you burn at rest which can be of benefit of LONG term fat loss.
Muscle gain: RT is the best way to build muscle mass, strength and functional capacity which is associated with improved musculoskeletal health & performance in daily activities. AT however simply does not supply an adequate stimulus to cause significant hypertrophy. -
Fitness: both RT & AE have shown to increase VO2max however, RT does not improve CV fitness to the same degree as AE likely due to often not being designed in a way to stress the CV system.
Conclusion: if max strength and hypertrophy is your goal then RT is what should form most of your training & vice Versa for CV fitness development. If FAT loss is your goal then both are effective just driven by different mechanisms I.e RT aids in preserving LBM & maintaining metabolic rate while AE aids in increasing energy expenditure to create a calorie deficit. Overall, regardless of your goals, you should still perform a little bit of both for total physique, health & fitness.
