Cézanne painted many portraits of peasants and the working class throughout his life. In this portrait, Man with Pipe, the sitter's clothing is simple and shapeless, his pose restrained, and is placed squarely in the centre of the canvas. With no pressure to produce a recognisable likeness, these works left the artist free to challenge stereotypes, often bestowing an heroic status on the sitters he painted.
