Basically I work in the #Marketing department for @civilwartrails for free... lmao ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I found this cool #OpenAirMuseum today in Southern Maryland! The Bryanstown Tavern pictured was a local establishment built in 1815, it served as the base of operations for the Union Cavalry in pursuit for of John Wilkes Booth and David Herold.. Booth had assassinated (mortally wounded) President Lincoln at Fords Theater and were now on the run... Unbeknownst to the Cavalry, Booth and Herold were only a few miles to the north of the tavern at the home of Dr. Samuel Mudd. Booth had broken his leg while jumping from the balcony down to the stage as is told by popular culture and interpretation, though some historians believe his leg was broken later, possibly after falling from his horse during the initial flight from Washington DCโ€ฆ however his leg was broken, Booth and Herold had stopped at the home of Dr. Mudd to have his leg treated. After moving on from the home of Doctor Mudd, the Union Cavalry learned of Booth's presence at the Mudd house had the Doctor arrested as a conspirator and the assassination of President Lincoln. After the doctors initial arrest, he was interrogated in the tavern before being transferred to the prison at the Washington arsenal, now modern day ford Leslie J McNair, where he was tried and convicted as one of the Lincoln conspirators. For Dr. Mudd though, unlike Mary Surratt and David Herold, Mudd wasn't sentenced to he hanged, but rather the life in prison at Fort Jefferson in the Florida Keys. He was later released from prison because of good behavior and his usefulness as a doctor in treating fellow prisoners and his guards/soldiers alike. He forever denied being a part of any plot, or even knowing Booth at all, though msny locals report Booth visiting Bryanstown in numerous occasions in 1864, some even going as far as to say the two used to attend the same church services on Sunday's when Booth was in town... after leaving the Mudd House, where he was we allegedly in disguise and using an unknown alias, Booth and Herold did not stop in Bryanstown, instead they headed east and attempted to cross the Potomac River before continuing on...
