This is a great picture showing the anatomy of the perfect bowl. I'll point out a few things, feel free to add more in the comments below:
1) great flowing shape all the way to the foot, no harsh angles
2) the added step above the tenon does two thing - gives a flat surface so the chuck holds tight and it makes you create a better shape for the bowl. If you just have a tenon, the temptation is to turn to bowl directly into the tenon creating a squatty bowl. This stands the bowl up and gives it prominence.
3) the foot is concave so it sits flat, it's wide enough so it's stable, and the curve matches the curve of the bowl. .
