Behind the scenes at SALTS: OUR STORIES
You may have sailed with Cayla when she was a cook or in her current role as Watch Officer (both aboard the Pacific Swift). Or perhaps you have sailed with Cayla as she worked in a volunteer role or even as her fellow trainee!
As a Watch Officer, Cayla enjoys the daily opportunity to lead her watch group as they live life together whether they are standing watch, sharing a meal or washing dishes. As part of her duties, Cayla especially loves teaching lessons and leading the evening portion of the program which includes games and singing.
When asked if she could share about a challenge she has encountered while on board, Cayla spoke about an interaction with a trainee who was struggling to take the intermediate sail training test. Through conversation and encouragement Cayla watched as the trainee’s anxiety faded away and she could finish her test. Reflecting on this experience, Cayla was encouraged to see the power of relationships help this trainee overcome test anxiety and complete the exam.
Does Cayla have a favorite sailing memory? She sure does and she described it as so: “setting sail out of Knight Inlet while humpbacks breached everywhere. It was epic.” Cayla – thanks for being a part of our team and we hope you see SO many humpbacks this summer!
