ESSENCE Magazine named Mayor Acquanetta Warren as one of the nation and beyond's Woke 100 Women of 2018.
According to the magazine, "ESSENCE honors the women who are proven change-agents, shape-shifters and power players...These women consistently leave their mark on their respective communities and industries." The list includes an array of women including Black Panther costume designer Ruth Carter and #MeToo founder Tarana Burke.
The term "woke" is a slang word used to describe a person who is self-aware of what is occurring in the community. The term is typically tied to social injustice and gained ground during the Black Lives Matter movement. When it comes to breaking barriers, Mayor Warren states, "I am the first female mayor and African-American mayor [of Fontana], so I hold two titles that I'm very proud of. I'm honored to be recognized but more importantly to represent the City of Fontana at a national level." View the full story here: http://ow.ly/7fIb30jG7El
