No words can describe the joy, honor, pride, humility, excitement, wonderment and elation I felt about presenting @vanguardstem on an international stage at UNESCO w @tnash89. So much to unpack (STAY TUNED FOR OUR SEASON PREMIERE!), but for now, here are the pre- and post-talk details. Today on @thestemsquad challenge: rights ✊🏾✊🏽✊🏿 In this past year, I have marched, signed, campaigned, complained, felt tired, felt inspired, and grown in my activism, my feminism, and understanding. Most importantly, however, I have moved beyond talking, to action.

This photo is from the March for Science in Gainesville, where I held a two sided sign that read: THIS is what a scientist looks like: queer, latinx, feminist. // Science IS political - and it needs decolonising.

Shout out to my science twitter fam for helping me understand the intersection of being a feminist, an activist, and a #wocinSTEM, especially @christineliuart and @freeradicalsblog 💜 #MarchforScience #weareSTEMsquad #thisiswhatascientistlookslike

I admit it feels awkward, but I’m STILL going to introduce myself anyway! It’s my way to connect with new friends and give me an excuse to chat with old ones. I’m Camille, and I am an engineering student working in robotics. I started helping students realize their STEM dreams through volunteering and organizing various events across my community, but I also spend a lot of time writing and thinking about tech and inclusion on my blogs and on the web. Whenever I’m hanging out with friends who do similar things I am my most content...how about you? Let me know who you are in the comments below because I’d love to say hello!

Hi! I’m Michelle Barboza-Ramirez and I’m taking over the #100Women instagram today. Check out our stories to follow a day in the life of a palaeontologist...
.
In addition to my paleontology research and work behind the scenes at the @FloridaMuseum, I also love getting out of the lab and talking to people about science and issues facing #womeninSTEM!
.
Sometimes, that's by organizing special events at the museum like these "Women Rocking Science" trading cards that showcase the amazing researchers at the @FloridaMuseum who - surprise! - aren't just old white guys in lab coats 👩🏽‍🔬
.
Sometimes, that means interviewing guests for the @FemmesofStem podcast - a show I launched this January that focuses on the history of women in science, technology, math, and engineering!
.
And sometimes, that means doing really fun things like talking about the science of pop culture and nerdy stuff with @cosplayforscience!
.

Thanks for letting me share my day with you. You can keep following my adventures over on my personal instagram @michellembarboza and learn more about science history and women in STEM at the @FemmesofStem.

Although not a very flattering picture, I wanted to document the LAST LAB I WILL EVER HAVE TO TAKE OF MY UNDERGRADUATE CAREER 😭😩💕🙏🏽 I've taken 11 lab courses including bio, chem, ochem, physics, anatomy, physiology, and applied bio and all for ZERO COLLEGE CREDIT! (Can you believe that?!) And even though I am grateful for the experience, I have ultimately learned that Keck Science does not care about my time or my mental health. Labor should be rewarded, whether that be physical or emotional. That said, I'd like to be refunded for every damn lab fee y'all forced me to pay even though I haven't broken a single beaker or flask in my life!!! xoxo #WOCinSTEM #LowIncome #FirstGen #WeExist ✨ (P.S. Scope the double eye protection lol)

“I was introduced to this awesome organization my second semester at CSU. The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanic and Native Americans in the Sciences (SACNAS) is currently the largest multicultural, multidisciplinary STEM organization in the nation. Our programming @colostatesacnas is around peer mentorship, community engagement, and professional development. I’ve been fully funded to attend three national conferences that have increased from my first conference attendance of more than 3,500 people. This provides such a unique networking opportunity for the exchange of ideas, mentorship, and cultural exploration. This community has taught me that #representationmatters in the STEM pipeline and I’m committed to being a role model and mentor to the future generations of #WOCinSTEM. I had great experiences in Washington, D.C., Long Beach, and Salt Lake City.” -Luna Rey

As 2017 comes to a close you maybe fearful of what 2018 holds for you. Reflect on what you've encountered and achieved. Recall all the reasons you wouldn't be able to do somethings.
How many of those things did you achieve?
Or did you stay in FEAR - False Evidence Appearing Real?

In 2018 don't let FEAR control your life.
Do it in FEAR.
No matter what IT is just do it in FEAR.

For those of us who've spent our lives in spaces that tell us that we don't belong there, it can be hard to start taking ownership of what is rightly ours. Our ability to be informed and to inform others. Our ability to be knowledgeable and not feel badly for having ideas to share. The space to stretch our abilities and not apologize for taking up space.
.
Writing things under the #criticalecology hashtag has started to give me confidence here that I hope to take into the world of science, where I feel most isolated. Being able to engage with folks on here has given me so much certainty that scientists need to be thinking about the amazing ideas being shared about the environment in marginalized spaces. In fact, science experts need to know that their expertise is limited, and they need the nuance that nontraditional investigators can offer.
.
So as I head to the biggest meeting of earth scientists in the world this week to present my research, I want to say thank you to followers and supporters and badass folks on here who let critical ecology be a thing. Thanks for your kind words, insights, fierceness, and passion for seeing "us" where, for now, there is only a "them".

im grateful for life yet sometimes i get weary with what is on my path of purpose yet i trek forward any way, imperfect yet inspired... i know that wanting the world to be better & healing , takes soul work, day to day work & perseverance, no matter what 🌍♥️ When I heard this word, I started to think about #blackwomeninstem women in stem #blackandstem #latinasinstem #wocinstem who look to shift the science, tech, engineering &, math culture for the better...
I thought about those in education, biz, law & politics, etc. using their platform to change the world for the better...
sometimes you'll get weary, yet don't give up!

Our #HistoricalFemmeFeature this week are the ENIAC Programmers!
These six brilliant women programmed the first all-electronic digital computer for the US Army in 1945. But they never received credit for their work...😱 The ENIAC was the first all-electronic digital computer, a machine of approximately 18,000 vacuum tubes and forty black 8-foot panels. As the first programmers for this kind of machine, they had no programming manuals or courses. (HOW DID THEY DO IT?!?!) They had none of the programming tools of today. Instead, these brilliant women had to physically program the ballistics program....by using the 3000 switches and dozens of cables and digit trays to physically route the data and program pulses through the machine.... *gulp* 😨

Today we are recognizing these women for their immense accomplishment and stating their names for all to see!
They were Kathleen McNulty Mauchly Antonelli, Jean Jennings Bartik, Frances Snyder Holberton, Marlyn Wescoff Meltzer, Frances Bilas Spence and Ruth Lichterman Teitelbaum. 😍😍 Thank you for smashing the patriarchy with your BA tech skills!🤓

I was selected as one of the top 20 postgraduate science writers by ScienceToday 2017. My article titled: These Bones Were Made For Walking, details my MSc research on the evolution of upright walking, how some cool fossil ancestors walked and how our bone acts as a living diary! Understanding how our bone is affected by the way we walk can improve prosthetics, our understanding of bone degenerative disease and how our lifestyle impacts our bodies.
#Scicomm is so important. We have a duty to the community we serve to always share our stories. Knowledge is never the property of one individual, instead it serves as a gift to humanity.

Meet my pal Kim! She's a math PhD student and is becoming mathematician and professor once she graduates. While her work is largely theoretical (that is, it explains more about patterns in numbers than it does about daily life), she hopes to figure out applications of her work to computing in the future.

I think that Kim's work as a theoretical mathematician is super cool *because* it is intangible. I love that she is a Black woman doing work that is in some ways philosophical, and not obviously practical on its face. The reason that this is amazing is because to me, black women doing math is transcendent. In a world where we are so bound to our corporeal forms-- used for our bodies, judged for our bodies, disregarded for our bodies-- Kim's math is a way of disengaging from the limits of our body and the physical world, and working in the essential, the ethereal, the numerical. In math, it feels as though women may enter a freer, cerebral space.

#WCWinSTEM I’d like to share a project Dr. Ramesh Laungani at Doane University is working on called #1000STEMWomen Project. The 1000 STEM Women Project hopes to curate a video library where female STEM professionals. videos will be permanently available for ANY K12 (or college) classroom to utilize as a resource for their students to learn about the various types of science disciplines out there. The project hopes to provide an easily accessible resource for students to see some AMAZING female #STEM role models.

How does it work?
Each woman is asked to record 90 second descriptions of what type of STEM work they are! He currently does not have any engineers, so it would be great if you could add a video of yourself. Additionally he only has 1 woman of color (#WOCinSTEM) who has made a video.
Videos are all going to be seen through the Flipgrid platform. Videos can also simply be recorded on a laptop or phone and then uploaded to http://flipgrid.com/7bad90.
Since people are unfamiliar with flipgrid it may be a barrier to making a video. Please let Dr. Laugani know if you have other questions! He can be reached at
ramesh.laungani@doane.edu. More about Dr. Laungani can be found here. http://www.doane.edu/ramesh-laungani

Would ❤️for you to join #1000STEMWomen Project! Collecting 90s video introductions of #womeninSTEM so girls can see 👩🏽‍🔬👩🏿‍🔬! Be sure to share this out to your friends and family as well.

2018 is around the corner and many are setting goals for the New Year. But do you have a strategy in place to actually achieve those goals? 🤔
.
Today on the blog I discuss the importance of setting goals and creating a plan of action to achieve them. Don’t just dream about your goals, work towards them, so that you can own your success.

“Do you. Regardless of where you are, be authentic to yourself and don’t assume another persona because that’s what you think people expect. When we change our voice and dialogue to mirror the interests of those around us (e.g. try to talk sports with a group of men if we don’t typically follow sports), we undermine the significance of our voice and message. Badass women don’t ever compromise their voice—they sing loudly and let it be heard.” - What Interviewing 23 Badass Women Taught Me About Being a Badass Woman via @huffpost

What are you reading this Sunday afternoon? 📚

This holiday weekend can be both fun and overstimulating. Let your breath shift energy and call in peace and clarity.

No one escapes it. Family time, crazy sales, timelines, conflicting priorities and schedules--so much excitement and exhaustion happening at the same time.
When you feel consumed with racing thoughts and feelings, shift your energy through breathing patterns and get centered in your heart. Ask yourself what you need in that moment to restore inner peace. One of my mentors recommends, a simple "pause-breathe-smile". It is easy and works!
Happy #selfcaresaturday and shop #smallbusiness today!

Just eating this jerk turkey and enjoying watching my grandfather live his best life on his land. Happy Thanksgiving ya'll. Love on your family and be thankful that you're still alive and well. 💜

If you've been keeping up with current events then you've probably heard about the proposed #GOPGradTax –– repealing section 117(d) of the US tax code and allowing graduate students to be taxed on tuition waivers. At #VanguardSTEM, we found the lack of voices from #WOCinSTEM and other #URM students in media coverage to be particularly troubling. Underrepresented minority students in STEM PhD programs face greater obstacles than their White and Asian peers. The #GradStudentTax stands to potentially devastate diversity and equity initiatives in STEM PhD programs. See the link in our bio for more info.
We're calling on you, the #VSVillage, and other advocacy organizations to join in on the conversation to explore what this legislation means to our community. Join us over the next month as we delve deep into this discussion. Use the hashtag #VSGradTax to share your stories and resources.
