Last night, my favourite #kpop group won one of the most prestigious #music awards in #Korea. #방탄소년단 won a 대상 🏆 at the #GoldenDiscAwards for Best Album Of The Year. My heart soars!
People outside the k-pop #fandom may be baffled about two things:
1) Why this award is significant
2) Why #BTS (or even kpop in general) is significant
The 대상 is significant because it is the Korean equivalent to America's #Grammys. It is significant because BTS competed with other notorious artists who represent a label that has dominated this particular award for 10 years straight. Big Hit (BTS's label) broke the streak as its sole group won the much-deserved 대상.
It is not a surprise when friends/colleagues question my love for k-pop, particularly BTS. As we all know, music transcends language. It also transcends words, which is why a piano piece can bring someone to tears. I hold BTS close to my heart not because of the "make-up", looks or popularity. In fact, I embrace the opposite; beneath their stage persona exists the human spirit, love for the arts and the pursuit of purpose - just like your average human being. While the media focuses on their appearances or "foreign-ness", my fandom embraces the poets, producers, dancers and artists that are the members of BTS.
#KimNamjoon, the leader, has an IQ of 145 and once aspired to become a poet because of his love for the written word. #KimTaehyung is a #VanGogh enthusiast, analogue photographer and artist. #MinYoongi is an award-winning producer and lyricist. #JungHoseok was a mere street-dancer pre-debut but is now a lyricist, rapper and lead choreographer. #ParkJimin was originally a contemporary dancer before getting into k-pop. #KimSeokjin is a gifted cook. #JeonJungkook is a taekwando black-belter, videographer and a producer in the making.
To have seen them live at the #WingsTourInHongKong last year was a dream come true. To have spent it alongside my sister made it even more special. I can't wait to see them again. 💖
Continue to do and love what makes you happy. Just because people don't understand certain things doesn't mean it's wrong. It could just mean the total opposite. 🐇💕
