I was fortunate enough to get the Lafite 1999 right after release.
At that time you still could get a bottle for 120$. A few years back this wine was stubbornly backward. I was curious to see if it evolved. In general the 99 vintage wasn't particularly great, but many wines are drinking well now.
3 hours of decanting made this Lafite open up beautifully.
The nose had blackberries, cassis, tobacco, leather, eucalyptus and some herbs.
It is medium bodied with fully integrated tannins. The balance between acidity and fruit is perfect. This is not a blockbuster, massive Lafite, it is a very refined and elegant version.
It probably will benefit from a few more years in the cellar, but there's no need to wait.
