Haven't touched a bottle of the Mouton 2002 since I got it en primeur. I thought it was time to pop one to see how it evolved. The critics are not very convinced of this wine, boy were they wrong!
I decanted the wine for around an hour and it was singing like a rock star. The nose has blackberries, cassis, black cherries, pencil shavings, tobacco and some cedar wood. It is full bodied with great concentration. The tannins are almost fully integrated, there's a beautiful velvety texture to the wine. This is a blockbuster, classic Pauillac at its best. Mouton has managed to make an amazing wine in a weak vintage. At this stage, the 2002 is superior to the 2003.
