What better reason to drink wine than your health? Then cheers to the full-bodied Syrah! One of the reds with the highest amount of antioxidants and ABV.
Syrah is the 6th most planted grape variety in the world. It’s originally from the Northern Rhone Valley in France. In fact, it’s the only red grape allowed by AOC rules in the appellations of Cote Rotie and Hermitage. Also, it’s consider Australia’s flagship wine where it is referred to as Shiraz. Both regions produce outstanding examples of Shirah/Shiraz and just attests to the versatility of the grape. Australian versions are also easier on the wallet.
Syrah is often bottled on its own but also it can be blended with other grapes to give a wine more backbone. The most common blends with Syrah are Grenache, Mourvedre and Cabernet Sauvignon.
P.S. If you encounter a bottle of Petite Sirah it does not mean a “little Syrah”. This is an entirely different grape variety and it’s the result of a cross-pollination between Syrah and Peloursin.
