I tasted a California Pinot Noir with some friends today, and it sparked a serious craving. I've never been one for Pinot Noir, but as we all know, the palate evolves and changes with time and experience (and age, not gonna lie 👵🏾). I've tasted dozens if not hundreds of Pinot Noirs in the 10 (ahem, 14) years since I first started getting "into" wine, however it was not until *maybe* this year that I started to really appreciate them. One of the best New World Pinot Noirs I've ever been able to appreciate has been from Brutocao Cellars. Now that I actually enjoy Pinot Noir I can say I'm honestly in love! Anyway, the Morals of this story are 1. never discount a certain style or varietal: keep tasting everything every time, because you might encounter a version or style that changes your mind. And 2. Brutocao Cellars wine is the JAM. 🍾🍷🥂

Happy New Year to all 🎉🎉🎉 Starting the New Year the right way with 2005 Cristal ‼ Little fun fact....This is the brand name of a Champagne produced by Louis Roederer. It has a flat-bottomed clear, "crystal" bottle, anti-UV cellophane wrapper, and gold label. Widespread awareness of its high price has given the wine an image of exclusivity that, in turn, has elevated demand. Cristal was first created in 1876 for Alexander II of Russia, As the political situation in Russia at the time of his rule was unstable, he ordered that champagne bottles for his Three Emperors Dinner to be made clear, so that he could see the bubbles and also to prevent hiding a bomb beneath them, as could happen with a typical dark green indented bottle. Louis Roederer commissioned a Flemish glassmaker to create a clear lead glass Champagne bottle with a flat bottom. The Champagne has since become known as "Cristal". (Ref. Wikipedia) 🍾🍾🍾

After reviewing the test we got down to the business of Pinot Noir. Or as Titus Andromedon sang, "Peeenoooo Noooiiirrrr!" 🍇#titusandromedon 🍇#kimmyschmidt
IF you watched the movie Sideways a few too many times, you'll recall the movie's extensive discussions about how fragile Pinot Noir grapes are. Well, turns out that was accurate. The thin skinned, tightly clustered grapes need a cool climate to thrive. In California especially, that means cooling coastal breezes. Coastal areas bring fog and moisture that can become trapped in the tight clusters and make them prone to rot. Adding to this: Pinot yields are low, and it's a super easy wine to screw up. Its inherent flavor pofile is delicate, and it takes a skilled winemaker to coax out the best expression of the clones used and the earth on which it is grown. 🍷
All of the above means: if you want a really exceptional Pinot Noir, it isn't going to come cheaply. #worthit

Happy Wine Wednesday! Late edition featuring Zonin Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore 2015! Fantastic wine for the money, under $20! Highly rated and regarded, a tremendous wine - medium plus body, medium plus ruby in colour. Dry with a smooth fruity finish, aromas of ripe red cherry, cassis, cherry cake and jamminess. On the palate flavour notes are quite similar with some spiciness. Overall this is a very well balanced and flavourful wine. Took Platinum at the 2017 Decanter Wine Awards, awarded 96 points. Georges Laval Cumières and Jacques Lassaigne Le Cotet. And the new spectacular Riedel Performance glasses.
Lassaigne is using unheard-of perpetual reserve bottle system for Le Cotet. Winemaker saves bottles of each release. When time is right he disgorges these bottles to get rid of the lees, and pours the champagne back into the tank. The wine spends there enough time to let the bubbles fade and is then again transferred to bottle together with base wine for secondary fermentation. These old bottles add complexity to the wine. Unlike in Selosse’s Substance which is moreover a different kind of solera, reserves here are only 10%, the rest being base wine of the current vintage. There is a portion in the current Le Cotet that was fermented at least 9 different times! Cedar nuts, iodine, ginger and lemon aromas with saline and very dry taste. Complex and yet so fresh. This chardonnay is still on its way up.
Laval’s 2013 Cumières has peach, fresh almond, green apple with oyster shell salinity and drop of lemon in taste.
Two Brut Nature champagnes that speak of place and winemaker more than of grape variety.
