Many people asked me about where I shoot, and if I use artificial lights. Most of my indoors portraits are shot at home, in front of a wall and close to a window. I never use flash.
I do believe in the importance of being able to shoot anywhere, and make it work. You don’t need fancy expensive lights to create what you want to create. Working with the available light is definitely a skill, but like any other skill, the key word is: practice. I did not wake up one day while perfectly mastering the art of shooting portraits in a low light situation or with one window available. It takes time to get to know your gear and be able to overcome any challenge.
But it’s worth it. The day you are able to create an image you had in mind for a long time is the day you finally realize that all those trials and failures were worth it.
Study the light, practice, play, try, fail, try again, fail again, practice more, succeed, practice again, fail again, try again. Repeat every fucking single day of your life.
