This is how I like to record rock/metal guitars.. 🧐 I usually go with the combination of a brighter (on axis, in the middle, or if too bright on the edge of the cap) MD421 and a darker (on axis, on the cone, a few inches from the cap edge.. again depending how bright or dark the sound needs to be..) sm57.. I like to place them right on the mesh/grill of the cab or sometimes a few inches from it.. It just sounds the way I like as close to the speaker as possible.. I blend the two mics together to the sound I like (you can do this on your desk, or daw). I use very little if any eq on either mic, bus them together to a mono track and that’s how I get a nice powerful guitar sound ready to be recorded..!! This time I had also two sm57:s going on with fredman technique (wich is great!!) but as I said, I usually end up with the md421 and sm57 combination.. 🙂 I also like to use my Framus Dragon cab because it has 2x V30 and 2x greenbacks in it and it sounds awesome..!! 😎 Sure, it ’s not the best cab in the world but does the trick for me every time. 🙂 But really, any decent cabinet works fine if you just play with the mic placements and find your sweet spots.. 🙂
Ps. Wilkinson audio make awesome sm57 mic clips for the fredman technique..
