Last week, @womenwhohike challenged you to set a goal for yourself, whether it be a short or long term hiking goal, or a personal goal not related to hiking.
I’m very much a goal-oriented person. Setting goals and sharing them with others is how I hold myself accountable, get excited, and get things done.
So, here’s my long term hiking goal I’m super excited to share: Climb Denali by for my 30th birthday (Spring 2020).
I’ve got a ton of work and training to do to even attempt this, and over the last week I’ve starting planning out a loose training schedule.
Most importantly, over the next year, I am focusing on studying and perfecting my mountaineering skills, i.e snow anchor building, rope work, avalanche and crevasse rescue, etc. I plan to get field practice with at least one skill biweekly.
I plan to build my physical strength through weight lifting and rock climbing 2-3x weekly, and hiking at least 1x weekly, with a pack up to 100lbs closer to the expedition.
And arguably more important than building physical strength, I need to woman up and build mental strength by spending several winter nights in an alpine region, likely on overnight 14er trips. Been waiting for a weekend without a storm to plan a trip!
And I hope to climb at least one high altitude (18,000’+) peak before heading to Alaska.
Before a year or so ago, I never thought a mountain like this would ever be in the cards for me. But I’m confident that if I study and train hard, I’ll be well prepared to give it a shot.
If any of my followers have climbed Denali, I’d love to hear from you and pick your brain.
