Tigers are an endangered species that need our help in a big way! There may be fewer than 3500 individuals left in the wild and scientists believe breeding populations occur in only eight countries and 40 population strongholds across Asia! My tiger work for @natgeo magazine over the past 20 years has taken me to document tigers in places as wild as Kaziranga National Park in India and northern Sumatra in Indonesia and I see the same threats facing this iconic species: poaching, deforestation and an increasing body part trade in China! When the demand for wild and captive tiger parts stops so too will the poaching of this beautiful cat! #wildaid

We need to unite in saving this iconic big cat that is an ambassador of wild places and human cultures! Tigers are also the most important apex predators in forests across Eurasia and when you lose them from a forest, deer and pig numbers can increase and the forest loses an important ecosystem engineer!

Orphaned Sumatran elephants, rarely make it to adulthood. Help us prevent human - elephant conflict. We have ordered two collars from the United States, and we'll be fitting them on two different herds of elephants. Allowing us to understand the herds movements and helping is with the science. With 6 GPS download locations a day, this will allow our Ranger patrol to be in a place to prevent any human elephant conflicts from happening. But we still need to raise funds to get more elephant patrol units into the field. Help us directly with a contribution to our Forest & Elephant patrols! Link in bio :) right now.

Ignorance, greed and corruption killed this beautiful soul. The elephants will miss you. RIP Wayne Lotter 🙏🏼🐘😢
The head of an animal conservation NGO who had received numerous death threats has been shot and killed by an unknown gunman in Tanzania.

Wayne Lotter, 51, was shot on Wednesday evening in the Masaki district of the city of Dar es Salaam. The wildlife conservationist was being driven from the airport to his hotel when his taxi was stopped by another vehicle. Two men, one armed with a gun opened his car door and shot him.

Lotter was a director and co-founder of the PAMS Foundation, an NGO that provides conservation and anti-poaching support to communities and governments in Africa. Since starting the organisation in Tanzania in 2009, he had received numerous death threats relating to his work.

Police in Tanzania have launched an investigation into his death.

Imagine a world where society held the same excitement for daily natural wonders as they do for a solar eclipse.

Migrations en masse to see wildflowers blooming, suns setting, birds flying, trees swaying, ferns crouching, waves crashing, whales singing, lions roaring, butterflies roaming, and corals riotous with color.

Taste for destruction would vanish, and the earth would smile.

How magical it would be, to see our species return home

Hyenas have an undeserved bad reputation. Truth is they are very social animals with strong family bonds. They also play an important part in the overall 'renovation system' in nature, eating almost everything! Nothing is wasted. This little hyena pup was rather curious and did not run away as we got closer. Beautiful little animal.

I am coming to the conclusion that this perception of better than / lesser than in whatever context is the root of all evil. Whether this is about gender, race, sexuality, class, where you were born, or the environment. Only the idea that we are worth more, that humans are somehow more deserving can lead humanity to cause such immeasurable pain and damage.
This is what we have to work on on all fronts!

Our African adventure began with a night in Nairobi and a trip to the @dswt David Sheldrick elephant orphanage 🐘🐘🐘⠀

It was here that we saw first hand some of the extraordinary work of this very special wildlife trust (including bottle feeding, a popular time of day for the occupants!) 🍼🍼🍼⠀

The main purpose of the Trust is to give sanctuary to orphan baby elephants, who for a variety of reasons have lost their mothers and would not survive alone in the wild 🌵🌴🌳🐆⠀

We adopted our own baby elephant, two year old Malkia, whose mother was a very noble creature roaming during the times that David Sheldrick himself was alive. Sadly she was too elderly to look after Malkia, who would have perished had it not been for the Trust. She now stands a good chance of being reintroduced into the wild when the time is right 😊😊😊⠀

Check out Marine Ecology Progress Series for our comment on the latest population estimate for white sharks in South Africa.

Estimating population size for any marine species is no simple task.

We've learned this lesson time and again in South Africa, the US and Australia, where attempts have been made in the past to answer just how many white sharks are swimming in national waters. Several lessons have emerged from these attempts, namely, again that accomplishing this goal is not easy, but also that we have an important duty as scientists to be aware of any uncertainty in our results, and ensure that we communicate this uncertainty in our findings.

It can be a difficult pill to swallow. There is a substantial amount of accomplishment involved in protecting an animal and this creates an incentive for conservationists to fight for listing animals on endangered species lists. These accomplishments, however come at a cost.

A critical component of conservation is that the limited resources available are used efficiently and effectively for the species most in need.

We asked the authors of a recent population estimate to clarify some uncertainties we identified in their work, in an attempt to ensure that the research outputs of the scientific community in South Africa use the best available data and methods with full disclosure of any limitations so that any resulting management decisions are supported by sound scientific knowledge.
