Ask most wine lovers their favourite white wine variety and I reckon 7/10 would say Riesling. Amongst the general public however, Riesling is largely avoided, left gathering dust on shop shelves. Why is it? Maybe it brings back memories of horribly cheap, overly sweet wine that your Nan drinks? Maybe you don’t even think about it as you head straight for the Chardonnay? Whatever your reason, I want to encourage you to give this (my favourite white grape variety) a go.
Riesling (This one is German, other excellent examples are from Alsace or Australia) 👄
Lemon zest and lemon peel, baked apple and floral notes. It leaves a cold steel like minerality on the tongue with a hint of stone fruits on the finish. Now this isn’t a bone dry Riesling (I’d get an Ausssie one for that) but that tiny tiny (and I mean tiny) hint of sweetness means it’s a perfect pairing for spicy Thai curry or spicy seafood!
