I can't begin to pour the various emotions into one to describe this past weekend. Motivation, anxiety, anticipation, elation, despair, frustration, gratitude, relief, and rage are all parcel to this annual festival known as @therealtwofourhell
This year was very promising! My teammate @james.climbs and I planned out everything from music jamz down to the last PBJ sandwich. His goal was the mile, and mine was 150 laps.
During our preparation for the competition, James had warned me that his performance might begin to suffer during the wee hours of the morning and I had permission to do whatever was necessary to keep him psyched and moving. Around 1am, he began slowing down, as I recognized the manifestations of his previous concerns. James is a strong climber, and I knew if I could give him enough energy we could both pull through to our goals. By 2am, he told me that though his head was in the game, his body was not cooperating. He offered to step back, climbing only one lap per hour to technically compete for the full 24, and to hold the rope for me while I charged onwards to my goal of 150. At first, my pride wouldn't let me accept such an offer, and I made a last ditch effort to rally him on. After an honest conversation at African Herbman, James made his point, and I was very humbled to deign his gracious sacrifice.
Long story short, I ended up with 153 laps. James ticked around 120? laps, or the equivalent of 12 60' laps shy of the mile. You were so close, bro!! I couldn't have done it without your support and all the psych from the random other climbers, volunteers, friends, and spectators! I love this community so much and can't wait until next year!
@seanvallefuoco, Insta is being a turd and won't let me tag you in the pic, but you and @melissasavardrosas also kicked total butt this year!
