This sculpture, known as "The Queen of Uxmal," is on display at the Maya museum in Mérida. It's a great museum with a lot of interactive displays and interesting info about Maya civilization and the Yucatan in general, including its fascinating geology.

The arch at Kabah archaeological site. This is the largest freestanding arch built by the Maya and marks one end of the sacbe (causeway) that linked the ancient cities of Kabah and Uxmal, some 18 km (10 miles) apart.

An iguana taking the sun on the south temple of Uxmal archaeological site. I can't tell you how many times I've been startled by iguanas on this trip. (I can't tell you because it's embarrassing.) Thankfully this one didn't startle me because I was already freaked out by the height I'd just climbed. (FYI - going down is worse.)

Special carts that run on tracks and are pulled by horses were used to transport agave on the sisal plantations in Yucatan state. Now they serve a different purpose: they carry tourists who come to visit the area's many cenotes.

There are over 150 species of agave growing in Mexico. This amazing plant gives us tequila, mezcal, and the fermented drink pulque, as well as sweeteners, soaps, and other products. The agave sisilana variety is used to make sisal rope and twine. Sisal production peaked in Yucatan state in the late 1800s and brought great wealth to the region. It's still produced today, but on a much smaller scale.

Maybe something about the way the golden yellow buildings contrast with the big blue sky, but also the deep sense of history all around - there are ancient pyramids on four sides of the town, besides the colonial buildings - and to top it off, the easygoing charm and friendliness of the local people: Izamal is a very special place.

There are many towns in Mexico that have been designated "Pueblos Mágicos" but Izamal is one that definitely lives up to the title.
