Vote for Wolfe Creek Crater, WA for the 7 Wonders of Australia: A rare combination of atmosphere, isolation and sheer uniqueness of the experience, the world’s second-largest meteorite crater is both mind-blowing to view and to consider how it was formed – the weight of which truly hits when seeing it in person.⠀
.⠀
Western Australia’s Wolfe Creek Crater is estimated to have been formed around 330,000 years ago as the result of a meteorite impact, and the resulting 880m-wide indentation it formed makes for a seemingly random, massive feature in the middle of an otherwise largely featureless landscape. The chunk of space rock which caused the impact is estimated to have weighed more than 50,000 tonnes and is thought to have been travelling at an impressive 15km per second.⠀
.⠀
Located on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert around 145km south of Halls Creek, the walls of the crater reach as high as 35 metres, with the crater floor more than 50 metres below the rim. The crater would have originally been substantially deeper when it was first formed, however sand dunes on the eastern side have blown in sand and raised the level of the base of the crater. The site was long-known to local indigenous people, who dubbed the site Kandimalal and believed it was the site where the giant Rainbow Serpent emerged from the ground.⠀
