#WestAfricanArt "Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign. But stories can also be used to empower, and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people. But stories can also repair that broken dignity." –Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

I went to @nikeartgallery for the first time last year and spent a few hours taking in the five floors of west African art. On my now annual trip to Nigeria, I had to go again. This year was even better than the last! I had the pleasure of celebrating Mama Nike's birthday with her! Thank you for your time, advice, and hospitality! #westafricanart #nigeria #bck2africa

In and Out of the Studio: West African Portraits: A gorgeous set of portraiture that evidences the spearheading work that has come out of the Western part of the Mother Continent, spanning 100 years. Malick Sidibé's work was, by far, my favourite; @iamnattee is checking out his intricate painted glass framing at the bottom there. #NYC #ReclaimNarratives #WestAfricanArt #ArtForLifesSake #DateAtTheMet 🎨📸

In April 2016, Arthouse- The Space presented "Coming Home," the first solo exhibition of Victor Ekpuk's work in Nigeria in over a decade.
Victor Ekpuk is a Nigerian-born artist based in Washington, D.C. Ekpuk came to prominence through his paintings and drawings which reflect indigenous African philosophies of the Nsibidi and uli art forms. Ekpuk reimagines graphic symbols from diverse cultures to form a personal style of mark making that results in the interplay of art and writing. His work frequently explores the human condition in society, drawing upon a wide spectrum of meaning that is rooted in African and global contemporary art discourses. #throwbackthursday #arthousethespace #arthousefoundation #arthousecontemporary #victorekpuk #contemporaryart #exhibiton #nigerianart #westafricanart #lagos #kiashowroom

The Arthouse Foundation is pleased to present Open Studios with Kadara Enyeasi and Thierry Oussou on July 8th, 3pm. Our current artists in residence will present their past and present work and speak about their artistic practice, followed by an informal visit in their studios. Guests will get a sneak peak at their ongoing bodies of work that they are currently developing during their residencies.
Kadara Enyeasi is a Lagos-based photographer and mixed media artist. His current project combines sculpture and performative photography and questions notions of masculinity in Nigeria.
Thierry Oussou is a painter and installation artist from Benin Republic. His current project explores the interaction of characters on the streets of Lagos, as well as research into aspects of language and translation across cultures.

Writing is the photographing of knowledge, but it is not knowledge itself. Knowledge is a light which is within man. It is the heritage of all the ancestors knew and have transmitted to us as seed, just as the mature baobab is contained in its seed | Amadou Hampaté Bâ from 'The Fortunes of Wangrin'
