~When emotions are expressed...all systems are united and made whole. When emotions are repressed, denied, not allowed to be whatever they may be, our network pathways get blocked, stopping the flow of the vital feel-good, unifying chemicals that run both our biology and our behavior.

Day 1. Utthita Hasta Padangustasana.
This is the first asana that I get to see where my head is at in relation to my heart.
If I'm upset or in any sort of funky mind gunk, I can't catch my balance. I also have a story I like to tell myself about an old ankle injury on one side and when I get here, sometimes I time travel to the night that it happened and I dig myself deeper into the muck.
It's interesting how thoughts and emotions can continue to live in the body long after the events that imprinted them occur.
What is also interesting is that recently, I've discovered a softer place in my practice as a whole. When I get here and start to notice that familiar uprising of memory and emotional pattern, instead of letting it take over...I focus on steadying my breath and I count and just let the memory and emotions come up, move through and be felt without damming them up with my mind.
And you know what? It's more often that I smile or laugh while this happens now. I think that means that the practice is werking.
