Why Emergency Medicine, you ask? 👩🏻⚕️ Because it allows me, to be me!
The fast paced environment, variety of patients (ages, gender, acuity, complaints), flexibility, and amazing ED staff, are all reasons why I am thankful to have chosen this field of medicine. I love being candid with my patients, working hard and laughing with the nurses and techs, and getting my hands dirty (I don't really do that in my personal life). 😂
Don't worry, I try not to hide the negatives. The schedule (while one of EMs redeeming points) can really put a wrench in your personal life. The shifts always go long, forget about plans afterwards. Most of us will always work nights and holidays, patients are typically not in their best mood when they see us (although I have been pleasantly surprised by many of my patients over the years), and the fast pace that I mention I like... can turn into a sprint with collapse at the end 😂 Its exhausting.
I noticed pretty quickly that I got along very well with other ED physicians and residents, when I was a medical student. I still said I wasn't interested, and kept trucking along towards a path in plastic surgery.
Well, when it came time to decide on a field for residency, my best friend decided on EM, and I had decided on plastics. And I was jealous of her. 😕
I had to swallow my pride, send a lot of emails, and bust my butt doing a lot of catch up work to get to know the EM staff, and way of life.
It was SO worth it. 🙌🏼 I almost went into a field that I didn't even feel was right, in my gut, because that's what I always said I was going to do!
