Vitamin D by overlooking the sea ⚓️ Just finished 4 night shifts in a row and it sure was nice to spend a little time relaxing with an ocean view @pelicanhillresort
What's the scoop on vitamin D, you ask?
Well... it comes from the sun, and when you work in a dingy Emergency Department on the reg, you are seriously lacking in this vitamin! ☺️
I am always low in vitamin D when my doctor draws this lab, it's no surprise. It's a fat soluble vitamin and is present in very few foods unless added.
What is vitamin D for, in the body?
Vitamin D helps with calcium absorption, bone growth and mineralization, modulation of cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, and reduction of inflammation.
Most people meet at least some of their vitamin D needs by being in sunlight. This can be difficult if you live in a state with many months of winter! Groups at risk for vitamin D deficiency are: breastfed infants, older adults, those with limited sun exposure, and those with intestinal conditions that may cause malabsorption.
So how do I get enough vitamin D?
An exact recommended value in the blood has not been established, because it likely varies with age and each person.
Vitamin D supplementation in the form of vitamins is an option, and increasing the amount of vitamin D in the diet will help!
Keep in mind you should always discuss questions and concerns with your doctor, and because supplements can interact with other medications, run this by your doc before adding or taking away any daily medications 😉🤓 Where's your favorite place to soak in some vitamin D?
