Do you know the story of Champagne Bollinger? 🍾
The story begins with Athanase Louis Emmanuel Hennequin, count of Villermont, who inherited a large estate from his family in the Champagne village of Aÿ. And immediately foresaw the great potential of Champagne, but as an aristocrat he was forbidden to become involved in entrepreneurial activities. He then met Joseph Bollinger, a widely travelled German who arrived to France to learn about the Champagne wine trade, and Paul Renaudin, a local winemaker. So the firm of Renaudin-Bollinger & Cie was founded in 1829.
In 1837, Joseph Bollinger married Charlotte de Villermont, the count's daughter, and thus inherited the Athanase share of the Champagne house when the nobleman died. By 1854, Renaudin had also passed away without leaving any heirs, so Bollinger became the sole owner. Since then, the house continues to be run by members of the Bollinger family.
