This is @zeekazi who has traveled all the way from Stockholm to rehab with us at @healthyballer. He plays professional American football overseas and is eager to get back to playing running back following his ACL reconstruction 5 months ago.

Here are a few cutting and agility drills we ran through to help him build up his confidence to cut in games. I always try to make the exercises as sport specific and many of the movements he is performing in this exercises mimic in game situations. Youโ€™ll see on every exercise I have him practice accelerating because as a running back that is what he is doing nearly every play.

Late Phase Recovery
This week has been all about those HAMMIES!
And what comes with hamstring strengthening? GLUTES ๐Ÿ‘ Almost impossible to train one without the other.
Yesterday we reviewed early weight bearing exercises. Today are some more advanced weight bearing exercises.
We strengthen in the ECCENTRIC phase (lengthening phase) first to safely build strength within the muscle and make sure it can tolerate load through itโ€™s full range. Bonus - eccentric training also helps increase flexibility! ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐ŸŽฅ Eccentric Assisted Single Leg Deadlift: Maintain a slight bend in the knee. Draw the hip back as the chest falls forward and allow the back leg to slide behind. Keep a neutral spine to focus on glute and hamstring activation. Press through the heel to pull the leg in prior to standing. Perform 10-15 reps, 2-3 rounds. .
๐ŸŽฅ Assisted Single Leg Deadlift: similar to the exercise above, but lift the chest as the leg draws back in. Keep the spine neutral, slight bend in the knee and press through the heel to lift. Perform 10-15 reps, 2-3 rounds. .
๐ŸŽฅ Eccentric Single Leg Deadlifts: think of your trunk and leg as a seesaw. As the chest lowers, the leg lifts. Keep the hip down of the leg that is lifting (back toe down) and only lower chest to horizontal or less. Maintain a slight bend in the standing knee. Perform 8-12 reps, 2-3 sets as tolerated. .
๐ŸŽฅ Single Leg Deadlift: same as above but lift the chest to increase load on concentric. Add weight as tolerated. 8-12 reps, 2-3 sets as tolerated. .
๐ŸŽฅ Hip Thrusters: to maintain max glute and hamstring activation, think of tucking the tailbone under at the top of the thrust. This will keep pressure out of the low back and maximize the true efforts of the exercise. Use a single leg to make it even tougher!! .

Modified single leg squats are a great way to improve asymmetry that may exist in your squat pattern, or to work on building the single leg strength to be able to do any variation of a single leg squat. They can also be a great way to work on getting rid of knee pain, depending on what the underlying issue is. In all honesty, folks spend way too much time working on trying to achieve a heavier back squat and not enough time working on making sure each leg can actually squat. โ€”
The video is pretty self explanatory, so, give it a listen and then give it a try. Fight for position. Go slowly. Focus on what youโ€™re feeling. Breathe. 3 sets of one million.

Plantar fascia roll. As Iโ€™ve mentioned before, soft tissue mobilization with foam rollers, lacrosse balls, and soft balls are affecting neural tension more than the actual tissue structure itself. A way to quickly decrease neural tension to the hamstrings and overall lower extremity chain is to simply roll out the bottom of your foot using a lacrosse ball, golf ball, or what I am using here - a softball. Here are the dos โœ… for the plantar fascia roll.

โœ…- Place a soft ball or lacrosse ball on the ground and place the arch of your foot on the ball. You do not need to put all your pressure/bodyweight on the ball. Start in a seated position prior to standing to get a feel for the exercise. If standing, be close enough to something sturdy to properly support yourself.

Slowly move ball to the inside, outside, front, and back aspect of your arch for 2-3 mins each side. Experiment with varying pressures to feel what works best. Be sure to stay off your heel and bones on the front of your feet (metatarsal heads). Donโ€™t forget to BREATHE.

๐Ÿฅ- Our daily lives and poor footwear choices can create unwanted tension in the bottom of our feet. Also - for those with โ€œtight hamstringsโ€, your ability to reach when performing a toe touch may be increased after simply โ€œreleasingโ€ or rolling out the bottom of your feet.
