SENATE APPROVES NYSC FOR OPEN UNIVERSITY GRADUATES

The Senate has approved the National Youth Service Corps scheme for graduates of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) The approval followed the passage of the National Open University of Nigeria Bill sponsored by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TetFund Sen. Jibrin Barau during Thursday’s plenary.

According to him, the Bill seeks to address issues relating to opening access for the teeming youth and adult working population to fulfill their dream of acquiring tertiary education. Barau said the objectives of the Bill included to amend the existing legislation with a view to removing the perception of the public about the university in respect of the word, `correspondence`. “The word correspondence gives the impression that the university is not a full time university and as such seen as part time. “These two concepts, ” correspondence” and ”part-time” significantly affect the way the public views the programmes run by the university. “This has been the reason why the Law graduates of the school are not admitted into the Nigerian Law School as well as the reason for the non inclusion of the graduates of the university into the NYSC scheme,” he said. Barau said the bill would allow those that pass out through the university to be included in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps scheme. “The law graduates from this institution are not enrolled into the Nigerian Law School which is a set back to the graduates of law,” he said. Barau further said that the amendment would allow for the inclusion of Information Communication Technology (ICT) as a means of giving out instructions and lectures. “It will also allow for life-long learning. You can learn at every stage of your life,” he said.

He explained that the amendment would help in uplifting the educational sector especially in improving the functions and delivery of education by NOUN. In his remarks, President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki commended the committee for the success achieved. He said the inclusion of ICT would go a long way in deepening learning in the institution.

Everybody dances,” he said. The senator however stressed that he will not only be remembered in the Senate for his dance steps but that he will be remembered for delivering because he has already set up machineries in motion to deliver democracy dividend to his constituents. He said in the past days, he had been understudying the legislature and would soon come up with bills that will affect his people positively. He added that although only two years were left in the 8th Senate, he would ensure to make an impact within the two years. “For the past one week, I have been understudying what is going on in the Senate and I love it. “I intend to pass a lot of bills that will benefit my people in Osun West. They have done well by supporting me. This election was an election that got a lot of attention and they supported me: the dance I did was a victory dance,” he said.

PINNICK: WHY WE’RE PROPOSING 24 –TEAM AFCON

President of the Nigeria Football Federation and President of AFCON, Amaju Pinnick on Wednesday in Rabat told the gathering of African football’s decision makers why CAF’s flagship tournament should be expanded. “This proposal is hinged on sporting, commercial and infrastructural reasons, and we believe that sooner than later, everyone would come to appreciate the position of the proponents of a bigger Africa Cup of Nations. “George Weah from Liberia became the only African to have been named the World Player of the Year, same year he was voted the African Player of the Year and European Player of the Year. He is from a nation (Liberia) many would consider a minnow in the African game. If we have a bigger AFCON, there will definitely be more talented players coming onto the stage, and we could just discover that the next ‘Weah’ would come from either Djibouti or Botswana. “For commercial reason, more corporate organizations and stakeholders will be involved and it is certainly a bigger cake for everyone. CAF will be richer and the Member Associations will surely benefit. When UEFA staged the European Championship in 2012, when it was a 16 –team event, they made a profit of $1.5 billion. Last year, when they staged a 24 –team event for the first time, they made $2.1 billion.

PRICES OF FOODS WILL SOON CRASH – AUDU OGBEH

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has assured Nigerians that the skyrocketing prices of foods in the country will soon crash, saying specifically that that of rice will happen within the next two weeks. He disclosed that the Federal Government will stop importation of rice this year. Explaining the reason behind the policy, Ogbeh hinted that the country has enough internal production that can sustain home consumption and meet foreign exchange earnings that can guarantee diversification of the economy.

In order to further boost internal production of the commodity and enhance the country’s comparative advantages in rice and yam production, Ogbeh stated that the federal government will sign a memoranda of understanding with Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD) and Ekiti State Government in the two critical sectors. He unveiled his Ministry’s intention to supply ABUAD with 20 tonnes of rice seedlings in the next planting season to boost rice production internally. The Minister said these in Ado Ekiti at the weekend during a visit to ABUAD’s farm and Ekiti State government . Ogbeh said the current economic recession being experienced under Buhari’s government has helped the federal government to think outside the box and had succeeded in bringing the deserved revolution to the agriculture sector.

According to him, “Of recent, prices of diesel increased from N130 pr litre to about N280, which makes the cost of tractors to move up to N14 million from N7 million. The interest rate on every loan given to farmers also went up, so the aggregate of all these factors caused increase in the prices of food items. “We are concerned with the plights of Nigerians. We knew that many are hungry but we are working round it because it doesn’t speak well of us in government that people are hungry.” #WeAreYONG #Nigeria #Youths #Instapost #Instabloggers #Instashare
