Ironman Florida Race Recap: A Novel
If you want to read something to occupy yourself for a few minutes, this if for you! If not, then just keep swiping left for more pictures🙃
Less than 2 months after running my first marathon last year, I was feeling really confident in my athletic abilities that I thought yolo let’s do an Ironman. I had never done a triathlon, I didn’t even have goggles, and my only bike was a beach cruiser. We had just found out we were moving to Florida and just an hour away from where Ironman Florida takes place, so that’s why I signed up for this one. Finally, after a year of waiting, race day was finally here and it was time to become an Ironman!
Goal time: 2 hours - Actual time: 1:33:40
The swim is what I was most nervous for. I’m not a fast swimmer and I’ve never done an open water swim. I also didn’t swim for over a month leading up to the race because the pool was closed and I wasn’t motivated to practice OWS😬 So needless to say my expectations weren’t very high for this leg of the race. Once I got in the water, I had no idea what I was doing. I couldn’t really see where I was going and inhaling ocean water was no bueno...the first few minutes of the swim was the only time I questioned why I signed up for this race😂 I actually hit the 2.4 mile mark at 1:20 but because of all of the extra zig-zagging from not being able to see buoys and moving out of the way to avoid jellyfish, I swam an extra 600m😳 When I got out of the water and saw my time, I was super shocked and happy that I survived and swam a lot faster than I anticipated. Now on to the bike!
