**Ancient Lands** - Big Island, Hawai'i
These lava tubes on the Big Island, are the remains of ancient flows that help create this island. The current flows in Puna may develop into structures like this over the course of thousands of years.
The waves on this day were quite large, and I had incorrect tide information. This mistake was critical as the tide was rising when I thought it was falling. I chose to stand here, which ended up being way too close for the incoming tide. I managed to get off a couple of shots before I nearly got washed into the hole. I used all my senses to keep my footing and high tail it out of there before the next wave. Moments later the tide (and large waves) had totally swallowed up the place where I had been standing. If you do find yourself along rocks near the sea, know your tides, and know your limits. Pushing beyond them could cost you.
